What's Ahead
It all comes down to two days as the 2019 softball regular season comes to a close. The Akron Zips conclude its 42nd season of competition this upcoming weekend, May 3-4, when the Zips travel to Oxford, Ohio, for a three-game series against Miami (Ohio). After potential inclement rain forced UA and the RedHawks to restructure its original schedule, the three-game series will not play out as a doubleheader on Friday, May 3, starting at 3 p.m., followed by the final contest of the regular season on Saturday, May 4, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
Scouting the RedHawks
Heading into the final weekend of the 2019 regular season, the Miami RedHawks stand alone atop the league standings. Miami is one win away from locking up the MAC Regular Season Champion title for the 2019 campaign, which would be the first regular season championship for the RedHawks in program history. Miami has amassed a 30-14 overall record which includes a 13-4 conference mark. Prior to the start of league play, the RedHawks competed at the USC Upstate Tournament (2-3), UNLV Tournament (4-1), the Lipscomb Tournament (2-2), SIU Tournament (2-1), and hosted the Miami Invitational (2-2). In the opening weekend of conference play, Miami fell twice to Central Michigan. The RedHawks then rattled off three straight wins and five MAC victories in six contests. Following a loss to Kent State on April 12 to hand Miami a 6-4 league ledger, Miami has since won nine consecutive games, including seven MAC match-ups.Â
Five members of the RedHawks lineup are hitting over .300, including Ashton Slone, Morgan Lott, Johniann Wahl, Kara Leckinger, and Haeley Tran. Slone, a 2018 All-MAC freshman team honoree, paces the offensive efforts of the RedHawks in 2019 including team-highs in batting average (.367), doubles, (14), RBI (31), slugging percentage (.594), and on-base percentage. Additionally, Slone has recorded the second-most hits by a RedHawk (47), 19 runs scored, and five home runs. Another sophomore slugger, Lott, is swinging a hot bat for Miami en route to leading the squad in hits (48), runs scored (27), triples (six), and total bases (81) while chipping in nine doubles, four home runs, and 15 RBI. A veteran in the lineup for Miami, Whal is no stranger to offensive success. As the RedHawks primary first baseman, Wahl is hitting .313/.478/.396 heading into the final weekend of play. In 134 at-bats, Wahl has garnered 42 hits, seven doubles, five home runs, 23 RBI, 16 runs scored, has struckout 18 times and walked 19. A pair of juniors, Leckinger and Tran, round out the final RedHawks hitting above .300 on the season. Leckinger (.305) has tallied 29 hits, four doubles, 16 RBI, and seven runs scored in 95 at-bats, while Tran (.300) owns 45 hits, six doubles, seven RBI, and 25 runs scored.Â
Miami has a pair of pitchers that have picked combined to pick up 28 of the RedHawks 30 wins of 2019. Courtney Vierstra and Brianna Pratt have each earned 14 wins on the year in 59 appearances and 33 starts. Vierstra owns a team-best and MAC second-best 2.02 ERA, has held the opposing hitters to a .215 average, has given up 112 hits, 46 runs, 40 earned runs, and struck out 208 batters, a conference second-most. Pratt has garnered a 14-6 mark, thrown four complete games, one shutout, struck out 93, and walked 35.
