Akron Drops A Pair In Series Opener To Miami

OXFORD, Ohio– After the Zips originally scheduled single contest turned into a doubleheader on Friday, May 3, the Akron softball team dropped the first two games of a three-game series to Miami, 0-6 and 2-4, at the Miami Softball Field.Â

Heading into the final contest of the 2019 regular season, Akron holds a 13-30-2 overall record and 3-17 mark inside the Mid-American Conference. With the wins, Miami clinched the 2019 MAC regular season crown and stands 32-14 overall.Â

The RedHawks dominated game one from start to finish as Miami recorded 11 hits en route to six runs while Akron was limited to two hits in the ballgame.Â

After Miami scored its six runs in the first two innings combined, Courtney Vierstra took over from inside the circle to pick up the win.Â
Â
UA's two hits came off the bat of junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) and sophomore Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.).Â

The Zips offense was again limited in game two but Akron was able to manage a pair of runs in the second inning and went on to record three hits in the contest.Â

Miami jumped out to a 1-0 lead after one inning of play before Akron claimed its first lead of the evening.Â
Â
With one out and runners in scoring position, senior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) smacked a single to the shortstop on the left side of the infield that scored junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio) from third. In the ensuing at-bat, junior Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) put a ball in play into the infield. The speedy junior Madison Carter (Newnan, Ga.) bolted home from third base and scored despite a play at the plate.Â

That was all the offense Akron would muster against the RedHawks as the Zips were hitless in the final five innings of the game while Miami scored three runs in the fifth the reclaim the lead before walking away with the victory.Â

Sophomore Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio) tossed her third straight complete game. In six innings of work, Newland gave up six hits, four runs, and struck out six.Â

Akron returns to action tomorrow, Saturday, May 4, as the Zips close out the 2019 regular season against Miami at 1 p.m.Â
