Akron Softball Earns First Ever NCAA Tournament Victory with 1-0 Win over South Alabama

BATON ROUGE, La. - A complete game shutout from Madie Jamrog and an extra-inning home run from Delaney Jenkinson pushed Akron to its first ever NCAA Division I Tournament victory with a 1-0 win against South Alabama at the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional on Saturday.
The Zips and the Jaguars battled to a 0-0 stalemate by the end of seven innings and needed extras to decide the winner. Jenkinson led-off the eighth inning with a home run to left field to give Akron a 1-0 lead, and Jamrog silenced a late push by South Alabama for the win.The Akron offense had six players reach base as Jenkinson circled the bases, while Sophia Wygast and Lily Sullivan distributed singles to left field. Meagan Lee, Andrea Day and Kylie Bailey all reached base by walks.
Jamrog (19-7) went the distance for Akron (35-24), giving up seven hits, walking four and striking out four over eight innings of work.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips took the lead for good in the eighth, scoring for the first and only time in the inning. Jenkinson put Akron on the board with a leadoff home run off junior Ryley Harrison.
