Zips Historic Season Ends in Baton Rouge after 7-6 Setback to No. 14 Virginia Tech

BATON ROUGE, La. --The University of Akron softball program season ended on Saturday evening at the NCAA DI Baton Rouge Regional, despite taking a five-run lead into the top of the seventh inning against the No. 14 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. The Akron Zips brought a 6-1 lead into the seventh inning, but could not hold on and fell 7-6 on Saturday at Tiger Park.

Akron controlled the tempo and pace of the game for six innings as pitcher Madie Jamrog allowed only three hits and one run, while the Zips pounded out eight hits to generate six runs.

In the batter's box, the Zips had four players with multiple hit performances as Haley Glass went 2-for-4 on the day with a double and three RBIs. Meagan Lee registered a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and added a walk, while Lily Sullivan and Andrea Day also generated 2-for-4 performances. Day recorded and RBI. Brooke Sivek rounded the offensive performances, going 1-for-1 in her final collegiate game.

 Jamrog (19-8) got the ball to start for Akron (35-25) and battled while limiting the Hokies' offense for the six consecutive innings, allowing three hits with one earned run, a strike out and a walk. Jamrog ended up throwing 15 consecutive innings as the Zips defeated South Alabama 1-0 just before taking on the Hokies.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron's offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of Glass.
The Zips then held the Hokies scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Akron pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Glass that scored freshman Liv Brown and junior Katie Cantrell, which brought the Zips lead to 6-1. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Virginia Tech scored six times over the remaining two innings to grab the 7-6 win.
