OXFORD, Ohio– For the final time in the 2019 regular season, the Akron softball team stepped onto the diamond to close out its three-game series against Miami in which the Zips fell to the RedHawks, 7-4, at the Miami softball field on Saturday afternoon.
Akron concluded its 42ndseason of competition with a 13-31-2 overall mark and 3-18 ledger inside the Mid-American Conference.
On the afternoon, the Zips tallied nine hits distributed by four hitters in the Akron lineup. Sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio) was the top slugger for the Zips and went 3-for-4 while scoring two runs. Senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio), junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio), and sophomore Lauren Holdsworth (Howell, Mich.) each tallied a multi-hit game going a combined 6-for-11 with two RBI.
Akron pitched a platoon of pitchers inside the circle that included starter Mikayla Newland (Chillicothe, Ohio), junior Adrian Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio), freshman Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.), and senior Kooper Vertz (Dilsboro, Ind.). In a combined six innings of work, the Akron pitching staff gave up 11 hits, seven runs, and struck out seven.
For the final time in an Akron uniform, the Zips six seniors, including Vertz, Lakins, Kimberly Rodriguez (Las Vegas, Nev.), Maddy Clowdus (Eastvale, Calif.), Sabria Bruton (Palmetto, Fla.), and Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.), participated in their final collegiate softball game.
After Miami jumped out to a 4-0 lead following three innings of play, the Zips got on the board in the fourth and fifth inning to cut the deficit to two runs (4-2).
In the fourth, Akron loaded the bases with a trio of singles. Lakins stepped to the plate with one out in the inning and singled into left field which scored Wulf from third.
The Zips came back one inning later to add to its run total when Wulf scored for the second time in the contest on a wild pitch.
Miami extended its lead to +5 heading into the seventh inning and Akron came to what turned out to be their final at-bats of the season.
Just as they have done time and time again in 2019, Akron began a late-game comeback. Clowdus drove in the first run on an RBI groundout to the RedHawks shortstop. In the next at-bat, Holdsworth poked a single through the left side of the infield to score the final run of the 2019 campaign for the Zips.
