Sophia Geier, Tennis
Akron junior Sophia Geier (Burgebrach, Germany) earned Zips' Student-Athlete of the Week honors, presented by The University of Akron, on April 10.
Additionally, Geier earned two Mid-American Conference honors on Wednesday. She was named the MAC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week and the women's tennis singles Player of the Week.
Geier helped the women's tennis team to 21 consecutive match victories and a perfect 6-0 record in MAC play with MAC wins over Northern Illinois and at Western Michigan with a pair of victories in both singles and doubles action over the weekend. Geier captured two wins at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set, Geier rebounded to defeat Northern Illinois' Adey Osabuohien, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3, on Friday. At Western Michigan on Sunday, Geier picked up her fifth MAC win with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Melina Lyubomirova.
Geier is the fourth Zip to earn MAC Scholar-Athlete honors this year. She joins football's Damauntas Venckus (week 1), track's Jackie Siefring (week 21) and Matt Ludwig (week 23) as honorees.
The MAC singles Player of the Week honor is Geier's third honor this season. She earned prior recognition on Feb. 1 and March 22. Geier and partner Ariadna Blinova (Riga, Latvia) won MAC doubles Team of Week on March 1.
