Isaiah Johnson - Men's Basketball
AKRON, Ohio - Senior Center Isaiah Johnson (Cincinnati, Ohio) was named the Zips' Student Athlete of the Week, presented by the University of Akron, on Jan. 16.
The Akron Zips (14-3, 4-0) remained undefeated in Mid-American Conference play behind the dominant play of Johnson, defeating Central Michigan and Miami.
Johnson became Akron’s 42nd member of the 1,000 point club after a career-high 33-point performance against Central Michigan. Johnson lifted the Zips to a 89-85 win ate in the game, scoring 10 consecutive points in the final six minutes of the game. Johnson added a key block and assist to secure the win. Johnson shot 11-of-19 from the field and 11-of-16 from the free throw line while adding nine rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot.
Johnson added eight points to his weekly total in a 74-70 win over Miami. He connected with 2-of-3 shots in the paint and added a 4-of-7 effort from the charity stripe. Johnson secured five rebounds, including an offensive rebound and put-back to give Akron its final lead of the game with 2:25 left to play. He added a blocked shot and a steal.
For the week, Johnson scored 41 points on 59 percent (13-of-22) shooting from the floor and a 65 percent (15-of-23) performance from the free throw line. He added 14 rebounds (7.0 rebs/g), three assists (1.5 ast/g), two blocked shots (1.0 blk/g), and a steal (0.5 stl/g).
For the season, Johnson has led the Zips’ scoring efforts in 9-of-17 games, while averaging a team-high 14.0 points per game. He scored in double-digits 15-of-17 contests, including a career-high 33-point performance against Central Michigan. He posted three double-doubles, while ranking No. 6 in the NCAA for FG percentage, shooting 65.1 percent from the floor (99-of-152).
Johnson pulled down a team-high 123 rebounds (7.3 rebs/g) with 75 defensive boards and 48 on the offensive end. He owns a team-high 57 assists with 14 blocks and six steals. Big Dog earned the Savannah Invitational MVP award, MAC East Player of the Week (11/28), College Sports Madness Player of the Week, and Sun Bowl All-Tournament team honors.
