Late Surge Leads Delaware Past Akron, 75-56

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -Â A fourth-quarter scoring run helped Delaware break open a four-point ballgame and lift the Blue Hens past the University of Akron women's basketball team, 75-56, on Saturday (Dec. 20) as part of the 30th Annual Hawk Classic hosted by Saint Joseph's.
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio), who had 16 points and six rebounds. Freshmen Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) added 10 points, while Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) contributed eight points.
Akron grabbed 34 rebounds compared to Delaware's 31, led by Clark's six boards.
Akron forced 13 Delaware turnovers. The Zips turned those takeaways into 11 points on the offensive end of the floor. Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After Delaware jumped out to a 15-8Â advantage, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 4:04 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from Clark, to move within two, 15-13. The Zips entered the second quarter down 18-15.
Akron took its first lead of the game on a three from junior Ella Wigal (Granville, Ohio), to take a 22-20 lead. The Blue Hens then came back to take a 32-27 lead heading into halftime.
After intermission, Akron inched to within one, 40-39, on a basket from sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) with 4:31 left in the quarter. Delaware responded to seize a 51-45 lead entering the fourth quarter. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 18 total points.
Akron could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 75-56. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring eight of its 11 points in the paint.
