Akron Earns 94-68 Victory Past Le Moyne

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -Â The University of Akron women's basketball team garnered four double-digit scoring performances led by 20 points apiece from junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) and freshman Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) to register a 94-68 triumph past Le Moyne in the consolation final of the 30th Annual Hawk Classic hosted by Saint Joseph's on Sunday (Dec. 21).
The Zips were led by Mitchell, who had 20 points. McGuff added a career-high 20 points, while sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) helped out with 14 points from the bench. Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) chipped in with 11 points.
Akron shared the ball well in Sunday's game, racking up a season-best 22 assists on 30 made field goals. Individually, senior Maddie Vejsicky (New Concord, Ohio) dished out the most for the Zips with five assists and freshman Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) also chipped in with five assists of her own.
Akron forced 16 Le Moyne turnovers and turned those takeaways into 18 points on the other end of the floor. Sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
Leading 10-8, Akron went on a 10-0 run with 5:46 left in the first quarter to take a 20-8 lead. The Zips then added seven points to that lead by the end of the period and entered the quarter break with a 27-13 advantage. Akron relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down five shots to account for 15 of its 27 points.
Akron extended its margin to 22 points, 40-18, with 6:12 remaining in the half. The Zips went into the intermission leading 53-33 after a triple from junior Ella Wigal (Granville, Ohio) with 00:01 left. Akron was strong from deep in the period, knocking down five three-point shots to account for 15 of its 26 points.
Akron pushed its margin to as many as 23 points in the third quarter and ended the stanza with a 75-52 advantage. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 22 points in the paint.
The Zips outscored the Dolphins over the final 10 minutes, 19-16, to secure the victory. Akron got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 10 of its 19 total points.
