SCOUTING BUFFALO
Buffalo comes into action against Akron on Wednesday, March 1, at 10-15 on the campaign, including a 5-11 record in the Mid-American Conference, following an 84-66 road victory versus league-leading Bowling Green on Feb. 25.
The Bulls are led by the trio of redshirt senior guards Re'Shawna Stone, Zakiyah Winfield and Jazmine Young, who are averaging 17.0, 14.4 and 13.6 points per game, respectively, while Winfield leads Buffalo in rebounding pulling down 10.4 caroms per contest. As a unit, the Bulls are recording 64.5 points, 32.4 rebounds, 13.1 assists, 6.8 steals and 1.7 blocks per game.

Individually, Winfield is rated third in the NCAA in defensive rebounding (8.7), seventh in minutes per game (37.54), 18th in rebounding (10.4), 24th in double doubles (13) and 44th in rebounds (261).

Akron bested Buffalo, 69-47, in Mid-American Conference action on Jan. 28, at James A. Rhodes Arena.
The winning return came on the strength of a defensive effort that hassled the Bulls into 26.6-percent (17-of-64) shooting, more than 17 percent below their season average.
Sophomore F Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) led all scorers with 20 points and nine rebounds, while senior G Dominique Camp (Dayton, Ohio) added 15 points and three steals. Senior F Molly Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) contributed 14 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Redshirt junior G Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) added a game-high six assists to go along with an eight-point performance, while senior G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) posted nine points, including a trio of three pointers, and dished out five assists.
As the Akron offense heated up, its defense remained relentless, forcing 12 turnovers, and converting them into 18 points. Add in a 43-33 rebounding edge, including 40-25 on the defensive glass, and the Zips limited both the Bulls' second chances. The 47 points represented Buffalo's second-lowest scoring effort on the campaign.
Hattie Ogden scored 15 points to pace Buffalo, while Jazmine Young added 12 in defeat.
AKRON TRIUMPHS OVER MIAMI ON SENIOR DAY
Playing their final home contest of the regular season, Akron honored its four seniors – Dominique Camp, Layne Ferrell, Rachel Martindale and Molly Neitzel prior to the game, then followed their lead to an 88-80 triumph over Miami on Feb. 25.
Neitzel led the Zips with a career-high 24 points and seven rebounds, while Camp nearly recorded a triple-double with a 19-point, 10-rebound and eight-assist performance, as well as a game-high five steals. Reagan Bass also reached double figures with 18 points in the win, while Ferrell added 14 points.
It was a triumph built on interior dominance and success in transition, as the Zips outrebounded the RedHawks, 39-35, including a 30-24 edge on the defensive glass en route to posting a 14-0 advantage in fast-break points. Many of those points on the break stemmed from Miami turnovers and helped Akron to a 19-5 edge in points off turnovers.
Maddi Cluse led Miami with 18 points, while Sierra Morrow also added 18 in defeat.
AKRON QUARTET HONORED ON SENIOR NIGHT
The Zips' contest versus Miami on Saturday, Feb. 25, marked the final regular season home games in the careers of seniors Dominique Camp, Rachel Martindale and Molly Neitzel along with redshirt junior Layne Ferrell.
Camp has appeared in all 27 games this season in her lone year at Akron, including 26 starts, averaging 10.8 points, 3.8 assists and 3.3 rebounds per contest.
A trio of four-year members of the Akron women's basketball program, Ferrell, Martindale and Neitzel have appeared in 77, 91 and 91 games as Zips, respectively, including 60, 30 and 33 starts. The threesome has averaged 7.4, 6.1 and 6.1 points per outing entering play against Buffalo en route to netting 571, 553 and 555 career points. Neitzel, Ferrell and Martindale have pulled down 318, 309 and 147 career rebounds.
DEFENSE HAS BEEN OUR CALLING CARD
Defense has been the key to Akron's success this season as the Zips have held opponents to under 40 percent shooting from the floor in 14 of 27 contests and 60 points or less in nine games.
Akron leads the Mid-American Conference in defensive rebounding (29.0), three point defense (.293) and blocked shots (4.30), while ranking second in field goal percentage defense (.392) and fourth in rebounding (37.3).
Reagan Bass is sixth (7.6) in the MAC in overall rebounding, while Bass is ranked seventh (7.8) in conference-only rebounding.
In conference-only games, Akron is rated first in the league in defensive rebounding (28.3) and blocked shots (3.88), while ranking second in three point defense (.289), third in field goal percentage defense (.413) and fifth in rebounding (35.9).
