BUFFALO, N.Y. – A strong opening quarter proved too much for the University of Akron women's basketball team to overcome as Buffalo registered a 64-50 Mid-American Conference victory on Wednesday, March 1.
Senior F Molly Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) continued her strong run of play recording a team-high 14 points, while pulling down seven rebounds. Senior G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added 11 points, including a trio of three pointers, while sophomore F Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds.
The Zips finished the contest shooting 33.3 percent from the field, including draining eight three pointers, while the Bulls shot 38.3 percent.
Re'Shawna Stone directed Buffalo with a game-high 20 points, while Jazmine Young and Zakiyah Winfield added 15 and 14 points, respectively.
The Bulls led by as many as 14 points in the opening quarter before a triple from Martindale cut the Zips' deficit to 21-10 after 10 minutes of play.
Akron outscored Buffalo in the second quarter, 14-11, and 16-14 in the third quarter, to enter the final stanza down six, 46-40.
The Zips inched to within four, 41-37, after a pair of free throws from redshirt junior G Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) with 1:54 left in the third quarter before the Bulls opened the final period on a 5-0 run and Akron could get no closer than five points as Buffalo secured the victory.

The Zips will close out the regular season at Central Michigan on Saturday, March 4, respectively, ahead of the MAC Tournament in Cleveland from March 8-11. The Central Michigan contest will tip off at 1 p.m. and can be seen on ESPN3.
