What's Ahead
The Akron softball team travels to Jacksonville, Fla. for week four of the 2020 softball season to and take part in the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament spanning the last weekend of February (Feb. 28-Mar. 1). UA is scheduled for five games and is set to take on Stony Brook, Jacksonville, North Florida, and Purdue.
Scouting the Seawolves
Last weekend, the Stony Brook opened its 2020 season as the Seawolves traveled to Florida to compete at the Madeira Beach Tournament. Stony Brook swept its competition going undefeated in its opening weekend of play defeating Colgate (6-5), Columbia (9-5), Providence (9-2), Georgetown (2-1), and Cornell (7-0).
Through five games, Jourdin Hering leads the Seawolves offense. So far, Hering has recorded team-highs in batting average (.294), runs (10), hits (11), and tied for the lead in homeruns (1). Melissa Rahrich (.471), Shauna Nuss (.429), and Nicole McCarvill (.357) have helped bolster an explosive Seawolves offense that scored 33 runs.
In the circle, Dawn Bodrug was lights out for Stony Brook at the Madeira Beach Tournament. In her four appearances, Bodrug recorded team-bests in ERA (0.69), wins (3), complete games (2), innings pitched (17.2), and strikeouts (35). Opponents are hitting just .070 when facing her.
Scouting the Dolphins
Off to a hot start through 16 contests over the course of three tournaments, tournament host Jacksonville is off to an 11-5 start nearly matching its win total from 2019. The Dolphins went 3-2 at the River City Leadoff that was highlighted by a win over Villanova, tallied a 4-1 mark at the Osprey/Dolphin Invite, fell to #8 Florida in a single-game match-up (0-8), and most recently went 4-1 at the South Alabama Tournament.Â
Offensively, the Dolphins have been led by Hannah Roberts who leads the team in batting average (.326), home runs (3), and RBIs (16). Mackenzie Buss has also played well so far this season batting .282, with 2 home runs, and seven RBIs.
In the circle, the Dolphins have been led by Alyssa Bilodeau leading the team in wins (6), complete games (7), innings pitched (53), strikeouts (74), and opponent batting average (.182). Seana Mora and Skylar Whitty have also seen action on the rubber for the Dolphins throwing a combined 50.1 innings, and have struck out 51.Â
Scouting the Osprey
Entering the North Florida/Jacksonville Tournament, the Osprey have played just above .500 ball. The Osprey went 2-2 at the Trojan Classic, fell to the eighth ranked Florida Gators (2-10), hosted the Osprey Classic where they went 1-3, and bounced back at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Classic posting a 4-1 record. Heading into the weekend, North Florida collectively has tallied a 7-6 record.Â
Offensively, the Ospreys have been led by Rebecca Koskey. Koskey leads the team in batting average (.500), runs (9), hits (19), home runs (3), and RBIs (14). Shannon Glover (.440), Kayla McGory (.333), Taylor Engman (.303), and Ashley Goebel (.278) round out the Osprey's top five hitters.Â
In the circle, the Ospreys as a pitching staff has turned in a 4.28 ERA, a .301 opponent batting average, given up 108 hits, 64 runs, struck out 54, and walked 49 batters. A bright spot for the pitching has been Morgan Clausen who has four wins (4-2), a staff-low ERA (3.57), and lowest opponent batting average (.276).Â
Scouting the Boilermakers
Through 15 contests, the Boilermakers have posted a 12-3 record. Purdue won its first five games at the FAU First Pitch Classic to begin their season. The Boilermakers then went 2-2 at the Madeira Beach Tournament before splitting two games with Central Michigan (9-3) and Connecticut (1-3). Last weekend, at the UNCG Invitational, the Boilermakers went undefeated sweeping North Carolina (1-0), UNC Greensboro (8-4) and Fairfield (9-5, 9-1).Â
Offensively, Skye Webb has led the Boilermakers as leads the team in home runs (3) and RBIs (18). Madison Douglass has also played a huge role this season hitting .472 with two home runs and 11 RBIs.
In the circle, Sydney Bates has dominated. Bates has team highs in wins (7), complete games (6), innings (57), and strikeouts (52). As a team, they have pitched well overall posting a team ERA of 2.31 and an opponent batting average of .240.
Series History
The Zips head into the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament with a combined 5-4 record against its upcoming opponents. Akron has seen success against the Boilermakers on the diamond posting a 4-1 mark against Purdue. The Zips split its first two meetings with North Florida (1-1), is 0-2 competing against Jacksonville, and is facing off against Stony Brook for the first time in program history.Â
Mid-American Conference Member
The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 27 years after joining the league in 1993 from the North Star Conference.
One Of The Nations Best
Heading into the fourth weekend of softball, redshirt junior Sydney Jascoe has been on fire at the plate hitting nearly every ball that crosses the plate. Jascoe's success at the plate has accumulated to the Zips third baseman ranking eight in the country in home runs (6) and 16th in RBI (20). Additionally, Jascoe also ranks 36th in total bases (36), 17th in home runs per game (0.43), 16th in RBI/game (1.4), and 53rd in slugging percentage (.837).Â
Long Ball
Akron has tallied 21 home runs in its first two weekends of competition off the bat of eight different Zips, including Sydney Jascoe (6), Bailey Drapola (3), Kayla Wulf (5), Laurel Devoe (1), Jessie Holzman (1), Macky Mitchiner (2), Tiffany Stevens (2), and Jaiden Bryant (1). Jascoe is the Mid-American Conference leader in home runs with six while Drapola, Devoe, Stevens, and Bryant all recorded their first collegiate home runs.Â
A year ago, Akron did not record its 21st home run of the season until the 23rd game of the season on April 10. The Zips are on pace to eclipse the UA's 2019 home run total of 28 before the Akron steps foot on its home field of Lee Jackson Field.Â
Zips Tidbits
- The 2020 season marks the 43rd season of competition for the Akron softball program.Â
- Sydney Jascoe was named to the All-MAC Second Team in 2019 despite playing just 33 games after a season-ending injury during MAC play.Â
- In 2019, Kayla Wulf hit a team-high .563 with runners in scoring position, .471 with runners on the bases, and .635 when successfully advancing runners.Â
- In 2019, Sydney Jascoe owned a team-best .538 average when leading off an inning and owned a team-best .362 average with bases empty.Â
- In 2019, Adrian Smith recorded a team-high 5.71 strikeouts per game and averages a team-best 1.7 K's to walk ratio, while Lexie Petrof averages 10.9 flyouts per outing.Â
- In 2019, Adrian Smith has posted a staff-low 7.91 hits per outing.Â
- In 2019, Kayla Wulf recorded a team-high 12 multi-hit games, Macky Mitchiner garnered 12, and Sydney Jascoe notched 11.Â
- Sydney Jascoe tallied a team-high eight multi-RBI games including six games with two RBI, one game with three RBI, and a career-high five RBI once.Â
- In the opening weekend of the season, Akron scored 35 runs on 50 hits. 27 of the Zips runs came in the fourth inning and after including a weekend-best 11 runs in the sixth inning alone.Â
- Newcomers Bailey Drapola, Jaiden Bryant, Laurel Devoe, Hailey Eckelberry, Tiffany Stevens, Maggie Sons, Shelby Fortune, Alexa DiFeo, and Lauren Frigyes all made their career debuts at the Samford Tournament.Â
- The Zips recorded a 4-6 record through 10 games and won back-to-back contests for the first time this season. In the second weekend of play, Akron garnered 44 runs on 59 hits as the Zips offense continues to be a very bright spot game in and game out.
- Madison Carter went a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate against Georgia State and recorded three hits against Butler, which marks the most hits in back-to-back games in Carters career.Â
- Bailey Drapol owns a team-best five-game active hitting streak, while Sydney Jascoe has tallied a team-high 10-game hit streak overall. Kayla Wulf is currently on a nine-game on-base streak.
- Nine Zips have tallied a multi-RBI performance, including a season-high five multi-RBI games by Jascoe.
- Akron has scored a season-high 24 runs in the sixth inning and a combined 60 runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.
- Adrian Smith tied a career-high 10 K's against Presbyterian (2/21) and picked up her first save in an Akron uniform in the Zips win against Bryant.Â
- The Zips recorded their first shutout of the 2020 season in a 1-0 win against Georgia State. The shutout was a team effort as Alexa DiFeo tossed three scoreless innings before Smith shut the door in the final four innings of the contest. Bailey Drapola handed Akron the 1-0 victory with one swing of the bat garnering her third home run of the campaign.Â
