JACKSONVILLE, Fla.– On day one of the Jacksonville and North Florida Tournament, the Akron softball team came up short in a pair of contests against Stony Brook (1-4) and Jacksonville (1-9) on Friday afternoon.Â
Â
Out of the American East Conference, Stony Brook remained undefeated as the Zips came up short to the Seawolves in the first game of the weekend.Â
Â
Stony Brook jumped out to a 4-0 lead after five and a half innings of play.Â
Â
Redshirt junior Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.) smacked her team-leading seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the sixth to give the Zips their first run. However, that's all the Zips could muster against the Seawolves.Â
Â
The Zips offense tallied five hits in the ballgame including two hits, one RBI, one run scored, and a solo shot by Jascoe. The trio of freshman Bailey Drapola (Brookfield, Ohio), freshman Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio), and freshman Maggie Sons (Dalzell, Ill.) each posted a hit in the game.Â
Â
Sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) made her sixth start of the season, recorded her first complete game of her career as the Zips righty tossed seven innings while giving up four runs on six hits and struck out two.Â
Â
Akron's second game of the evening went just five innings due to the NCAA run rule and a 9-1 score in favor of tournament host, Jacksonville.Â
Â
Heading into the fourth inning, the game was tied 1-1 after the Dolphins scored in the first inning and the Zips knotted up the game in the top half of the third. The Zips Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) and Samantha Malik (Orlando, Fla.) hit back-to-back doubles to hand Akron its first run. With one out, Cadmus doubled to center field before Malik's double to right field drove her teammate across the plate.Â
Â
The Zips are back in action on day two of the Jacksonville/North Florida Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 29. Akron is slated for a rematch against Stony Brook at 1 p.m. before squaring off against North Florida at 6 p.m.Â
