What's Ahead
After a weekend off of competition, the Akron softball team returns to the diamond to compete at the Morehead State Tournament. The Zips were originally scheduled for three contests against Morehead State, but due to inclement weather in the Morehead, Ky. area, Akron and the Eagles are now scheduled for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 10.Â
Scouting the Eagles
Heading into the weekend of the annual Morehead State Tournament, the host Eagles are winless after its first 11 games of the 2019 campaign. Morehead State dropped four games at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament, five at the Eagle Round Robin, and most recently, two at the Spartan/Pirate Classic.Â
Morehead State's offense is led by a pair of Eagles at the plate in Peyton Rose and Kalle Coleman. Rose, a freshman infielder for the Eagles, has recorded a slash line of .353/.412/.421. In 17 at-bats, Rose has collected six hits, one double, three runs scored, three RBI, and seven total bases. Coleman, a sophomore infielder, owns a team-high nine hits, two triples, and 14 total bases, however, has struck out a team-high seven times. As a team, the Eagles have tallied 51 hits, six doubles, 23 RBI, 30 runs scored, 33 walks, and 51 K's. Â
Four Eagles have seen action inside the circle through 11 games of the 2019 campaign. Lakyn Largent owns a pitching staff-high 10 appearances and seven starts on the rubber for Morehead State. In 22.1 innings of work, Largent is 0-8, given up 39 hits, 33 runs (26 earned), struck out 10 and walked seven while earning a 2.08 ERA. Randi Hamilton has made seven appearances and one start for the Eagles and Sara King has appeared in nine contests and started once.Â
Series History
Akron and Morehead State have squared off on the diamond nine times in each programs respective histories. The Zips hold a 6-3 record over the Eagles since the first meeting in 1988. Most recently, Akron fell to MSU, 0-1, in 2017.Â
Last Time Out
In the nightcap against Morehead State, the game remained scoreless through seven innings.
The Zips threatened in the top of the fifth as junior 2B Caitlin Gambone (Canton, Ohio) hit a two-out double but was stranded.
The Eagles scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh from a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 victory.
Junior Nicole Best (Broadview Heights, Ohio) started and lasted 1.1 innings. She struck out one and walked two batters. Handley relieved her in the bottom of the second inning. She pitched 5.1 innings, fanning one and walking two batters.
2019 Zips Tidbits
- Eight Zips, including Samantha Malik, Macky Mitchiner, Camryn Michallas, Amaya Smith, Lauren Holdsworth, Morgan Cadmus, Adrian Smith, and Lexie Petrof made their Akron debuts at the Blue Host Invitational.Â
- Five Akron players recorded an OPS of over 1.000 in Akron's first five games, including Sydney Jascoe (1.559), Jessie Holzman (1.115), Kimberly Rodriguez (1.004), and Samantha Malik (1.034).Â
- Sydney Jascoe recorded at least one hit in all five games for the Zips recording a five-game hit streak.Â
- Adrian Smith picked up her first win in her first appearance in an Akron uniform against Morgan State (12-11).Â
- The Zips scored 12 runs in their season opener, which is the most runs scored by an Akron team in a season opener.Â
- For the third time in program history, Akron has ended two games in a draw. No Zips team has finished a season with more than a pair of ties.Â
- In the first five games of the season, Akron stole 18 bases in 22 attempts courtesy of nine different Zips baserunners, including six base runners going a combined 12-for-12.Â
- Adrian Smith struck out a season-high eight batters against Morgan State in her second victory of the season.
- Mikayla Newland and Adrian Smith recorded the Zips first combined shutout of the season (5-0) over the Bears.
- Amaya Smith earned her first collegiate victory inside the circle against George Mason.Â
- Sydney Jascoe recorded three RBI against George Mason which are a career-high in a single-game.Â
- At the Madeira Beach Tournament, Akron recorded 36 hits, eight doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI, scored 36 runs, and went 13-for-17 on stolen bases.Â
- Sydney Jascoe has recorded team-highs in multi-hit games (5), hitting streaks (8 games), multi-RBI games (4), on-base streak (8 games).Â
- Kayla Wulf is currently on a team-best four-game hitting streak and has the largest active on-base streak at four games.Â
- The Zips offense has scored a season-high 18 runs in the third inning.Â
- Jascoe owns a batting average above .500 with a runner on third and less than two outs, and when successfully advancing runners.Â
- Laura Lakins is hitting a team-high .833 with runners in scoring position and .556 with runners on the bases, Jessie Holzman owns a team-best .778 average when leading off an inning, and Kimberly Rodriguez has totaled a team-high five RBI with two outs.
- Amaya Smith tossed her first career complete game shutout in an 8-0 win over North Carolina A&T.Â
Up Next
The Akron softball team is scheduled to compete in its final tournament of the 2019 campaign as the Zips travel to Martin, Tenn. to take part in the 2019 UT Martin Tournament on March 16-17. Akron is scheduled for a doubleheader against UT Martin and Green Bay on Saturday, March 16, at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., followed by a twinbill again versus the Skyhawks and Phoenix on Sunday, March 17, slated for 10 a.m. and noon.
