Akron Bettered at Penn State, 84-71, Despite 22 Points from Plybon

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The University of Akron women's basketball team garnered four double-figure scoring performances, including 22 points from senior Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio), but was unable to earn the victory as Penn State (2-1) registered a 84-71 triumph past the Zips (1-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
Akron finished the evening shooting 44.8 percent from the field, while the Lady Lions connected at a 43.2 percent clip. The two sides combined to record 15 three pointers, including four from Plybon.
Joining Plybon with double-figure scoring efforts for the Zips was senior Alex Ricketts (Mercer, Pa.), redshirt sophomore Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) and junior Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio). Ricketts and Sefcik notched career-highs with 14 and 11 points while Burry added 10. Teniya Page led the Lady Lions with a game-high 23 points, while Lindsey Spann added 21 and Kaliyah Mitchell recorded a 17-point, 12-rebound contest.
Penn State outrebounded the Zips, 43-41, despite eight and seven rebounds from junior Alli Ball (St. Louis, Mo.) and Ricketts.
The Lady Lions capitalized on Akron turnovers earning a 29-6 margin off the Zips' miscues, while Akron posted 19 bench points in the affair.
The Zips jumped out to an early 7-2 lead in the initial minutes of the contest fueled by three points from Ricketts.
The Lady Lions responded with a surge of their own going on a 12-2 run over the next 1:43 to assume a 14-9 lead after a triple from Page.
A lay-up by senior Brittany Gordon (South Charleston, W. Va.) at the 5:48 ended the scoring spurt to cut Akron's deficit to 14-11.
Penn State scored 12 of the next 14 points to assume a 26-13 lead after a lay-up by Peyton Whitted with 2:13 left in the first stanza.
Sparked by baskets from Sefcik, freshman Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Gordon, the Zips closed the quarter on a 6-0 run to going into the second quarter down 26-19.
Akron connected on 50 percent of its shots in the first quarter, while the Lady Lions made 45 percent of their shots, including a trio of three pointers.
The Zips opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run fueled by five points from Plybon and four tallies by Burry to take a 31-28 lead following a lay-up from Ricketts with 5:10 before halftime.
Penn State had a run of their own in the cards outscoring Akron over the final five minutes of the half, 18-5, to take a 46-36 advantage into the intermission.
The Zips shot 41.7 percent from the field in the first half, while on the strength of six triples over the opening 20 minutes, the Lady Lions connected at a 45.9 percent clip.
Plybon paced Akron with 10 first-half points, while Page recorded 19 points for Penn State.
Plybon then netted the first five points of the second half to whittle the Lady Lion's lead to 46-41, at the 9:18 mark. Penn State responded with eight unanswered points of its own to retake a 54-41 margin, before Plybon ended the run with a triple for the Zips at the 6:06 mark.
Fueled by three triples from Sefcik to close out the quarter, Akron entered the final quarter trailing the Lady Lions by only four points, 65-61.
After a basket by Penn State to open the final 10 minutes of play, Plybon and Gordon connected on baskets to bring the Zips within two, 67-65, with 8:33 to play. However, the Lady Lions scored 17 of the final 23 points to earn an 84-71 victory.
The Zips return to action on Sunday, Nov. 20, as Akron travels to Buffalo, N.Y., to battle Canisius. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
