BUFFALO, N.Y – Senior guard Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio) broke Akron's single-game three-point record after shooting 9-for-14 from beyond the arc and scoring a career-high 39 points to lead the University of Akron women's basketball team to a 73-64 triumph against Canisius College on Sunday, Nov. 20, at the Koessler Athletic Center.
Plybon went 12-for-21 from the field and hit a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line, while adding six rebounds and two assists. Plybon's 39 points reprsents the second-best single-game scoring effort behind only Rachel Tecca's 43 versus Eastern Michigan on Jan. 26, 2014.
Redshirt sophomore guard Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) also recorded a career-high 12 points after going 3-for-5 from three-point range and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.Â
Junior forward Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) contributed seven points, while senior guard Alex Ricketts (Mercer, Pa.) added six points in the winning effort. Additionally, Burry and Ricketts brought down eight rebounds apiece.
Canisius (1-2) was led by Lauren D'Hont and Sara Hinriksdottir with 16 and 15 points, respectively,
Akron came out on fire as the Zips shot 80 percent from the three point line, while Plybon went 5-of-7, scoring 15 of her 39 points in the first period.
The Zips took an early 14-6 lead at the 6:21 mark of the initial period after a Ricketts' three ball. Akron extended its lead over the following four minutes, 27-11, highlighted by a back-to-back three pointers from Sefcik and Plybon, followed by a layup from senior Brittany Gordon (South Charleston, W. Va.).
The Zips ended the stanza with a four-point play as Sefcik hit another three-pointer and was fouled, giving Akron a 31-13 advantage.
Freshman Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored the first bucket of the second quarter to propel Akron to its largest lead of the game, 33-13. The two teams traded points over the rest of the period as the Zips went into intermission with a 41-27 command.
Despite a battling Canisius squad, Akron maintained control throughout the next quarter.
However, the Griffs managed to fight back within eight points, 63-52, with less than five minutes left in the game. Canisius came no closer than seven points down the stretch as Akron brought home the 73-64 victory.
Akron will have a nine-day break before hosting Bucknell at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 10:30 a.m. as part of the Zips' annual Education Day game.
