Clayton Murphy, Men's Track and Field
AKRON, Ohio – Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio), a junior on the men's track and field team, was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Month for June, presented by The University of Akron.
Murphy capped an unbeaten spring capturing the 1,500-meter NCAA title on June 10 in a school- and Mid-American Conference-record time of 3:36.38. He became the first-ever Zip to win a running event at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while earning his second NCAA championship after winning the 800-meter title at the 2016 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Murphy's performance marked the third-fastest 1,500-meter time in NCAA Championship history and best since 1987, while also representing the ninth-fastest time by a collegian in the event.
He reached the 1,500 meter final after winning his heat in 3:49.03 in the semifinal round on June 8 at the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
