Clayton Murphy, Men's Track and Field
Akron, Ohio – Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio), a junior on the men's track and field team, was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Month for March, presented by The University of Akron.
Murphy turned in a dominating month of March for the Zips beginning with capturing the 800-meter title at the NCAA Championships on March 12 in Birmingham, Ala.
Murphy became the Zips' first-ever national champion in a running event crossing the line first in a facility-record 1:46.68 and earned first-team United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-America accolades for the third time.
Murphy opened the spring campaign garnering a first-place performance in the men's 1,500 meters at the Raleigh Relays on March 25. Murphy led all runners in the 1,500 meters crossing the line in 3:44.57.
He then captured the 800-meter invitational title at the Texas Relays on March 31. Murphy crossed the line in 1:47.38 to win the race with the seventh-fastest time in the nation this spring.
Additionally, he anchored the 4x400 relay team which posted the 19th-fastest time in the country (3:07.36), missing equaling the school record by three one-hundredths of a second.
