Clayton Murphy, Men's Track and Field
Akron, Ohio – Clayton Murphy (New Paris, Ohio), a junior on the men's track and field team, was named the Zips' Student-Athlete of the Month for February, presented by The University of Akron.
Murphy turned in a dominating February for the Zips registering four Mid-American Conference titles and three school records en route to leading Akron to its third consecutive MAC Indoor championship.
Murphy opened the month setting a new Zips’ standard in the mile running the event in 3:57.11 to capture the title at the Akron Invitational (Feb. 6).
A week later, he ran the second-fastest 800 meter time (1:46.11) in the country this year and a school record to win at the Iowa State Classic (Feb. 13).
He was named the Outstanding Track Athlete of the Meet at the MAC Championship after capturing individual titles in the mile and 800 meters for the second straight year, as well as anchoring winning 4x400 and distance medley relay squads. The distance medley relay team set a school record crossing the line first in 3:07.58.
He has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championship for the second time in his Akron career.
