Kelly Hysong, Softball
Sophomore designated player Kelly Hysong (Beach City, Ohio) was named the Zips’ Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by The University of Akron, on April 3. Additionally, she was named the Player of the Week.
On the week, Hysong led the Zips at the plate. She batted .700 with seven hits, four runs, four home runs, and 12 RBI in two starts. As a pinch hitter against Cleveland State, Hyson hit an RBI double in her only plate appearance, giving the Zips a 6-3 lead.
In MAC action at Eastern Michigan, Hysong was the Zips’ designated player, helping UA to two wins. In Saturday’s second game, Hysong went 3-for-4 for two runs off a a double and two home runs, becoming the first Akron player since 2012 to hit two homers in the same game. In Sunday’s final game at EMU, Hysong did it again. She went 3-for-4 for two runs, five RBI on a double and two home runs in the Zips’ 9-0 shutout victory (and a no hitter). Hysong’s two-RB double in the first inning put UA on the scoreboard. Her second homer in the top of the seventh clinched the 9-0 win.
Hysong is the first player in school history to hit two home runs in back-to-back games.
