Career Games from Brew and Mitchell Direct Akron in 86-79 Setback at Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -Â Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) collected a career-high 26 points and freshman Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.) added a career-best 23, but the University of Akron women's basketball team fell to Central Michigan, 86-79, on the road on Wednesday (Feb. 11).
Brew and Mitchell's stellar scoring performances led the Zips in the contest. Brew tacked on five rebounds and four assists. Freshman Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) also added a career-high 15 points.
The Akron defense caused its share of mistakes forcing 14 Central Michigan turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 14 points on the other end of the floor. Junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) led the way individually for the Zips with two steals.
How It Happened
After jumping out to a 9-8 advantage, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 5:49 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from senior Natalie Johnson (Waldorf, Md.), to increase its lead to 14-8. The Zips entered the second quarter down 20-18.
Central Michigan kept adding to that lead, building a 30-21 advantage before Akron went on a 9-1 run, highlighted by a bucket from Mitchell, to narrow its deficit to 31-30. The Zips continued to chip away, reducing the Central Michigan lead to 35-32 heading into the break.
Akron came out of halftime on fire, going on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Reed, to grab a 38-35 lead with 8:36 to go in the third. Central Michigan responded to seize a 65-53 lead entering the fourth quarter. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 21 points in the paint.
Central Michigan widened its lead in the fourth, constructing a 66-53 advantage before Akron went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Mitchell's three, to shrink the deficit to 66-61 with 7:07 to go in the contest. Central Michigan responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 86-79. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 18 of its 26 points in the paint.
