Akron Falls Short in 74-53 Setback To Central Michigan

AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's basketball team fell short in a 74-53 setback to Central Michigan at home at James A. Rhodes Arena on Wednesday (Jan. 21).
Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) led the Zips with a team-high 16 points. Junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) also tacked on a nine-point, six-rebound and two-steal performance, while junior Ella Wigal (Granville, Ohio)Â pulled down a team-high six rebounds to go along with three points off the bench.
Akron forced 17 Central Michigan turnovers turning those takeaways into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) led the way individually with two steals.
How It Happened
After playing to a 2-2 tie early in the game, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 8:17 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from freshman Monique Mitchell (South Bend, Ind.), to take a 7-2 lead. The Zips entered the second quarter down 16-12.
Central Michigan added to its lead, building a 33-22 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Brew, to narrow its deficit to 33-27, a score that held until halftime.
Akron faced a 49-37 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Akron scored two fast break points in the quarter.
Akron was unable to pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 74-53. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 12 of its 16 points in the paint.
