Brew Scores 17 Points; Akron Falls at Bowling Green, 80-62

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -Â Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) paced the University of Akron women's basketball team with a team-high 17-point effort but the Zips fell 80-62 at Bowling Green on the road Wednesday (Jan. 28).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by Brew, who had 17 points. Sophomore Liz Murphy (Yackandandah, Australia) tacked on 10 points off of the bench, while junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) added eight points, six rebounds and two steals. Additionally, sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio) registered a nine-point evening for the Zips.
Akron's defense held Bowling Green to only 20 percent shooting from beyond the arc. The Zips also limited Lauren Gerken to 1-of-7 shooting from downtown in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 5-2, Akron went on a 5-0 run with 7:03 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from McGuff, to take a 7-5 lead. The Zips entered the second quarter down 16-11Â and faced a 37-22 halftime deficit.
Bowling Green continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 63-34 advantage before Akron went on a 7-0 run, punctuated by a basket from McGuff, to trim its deficit to 63-41 with 34 seconds to go in the third. Bowling Green countered and stretched its lead to 65-41 heading into the fourth. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.
Akron narrowed its deficit to 67-47 before going on a 6-0 run to shrink the deficit to 67-53 with 5:17 to go in the contest. Bowling Green responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 80-62. Akron got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 14 of its 21 total points.
