Ni'Rah Clark Scores 22 Points in Akron's 91-79 Loss at Kent State

KENT, Ohio - University of Akron sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) scored 22 points, but the Zips fell to Kent State, 91-79, on the road on Saturday (Jan. 17).
Clark added six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks to her 22 point game to lead the Zips. Freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.) helped out with 13 points and three steals and freshman Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) chipped in with eight points and two steals.
Junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) pulled down three offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Akron, grabbing 11 boards and turning them into 22 second-chance points.
Akron forced 17 Kent State turnovers turning those takeaways into 15 points on the other end of the floor. Brew's three steals led the way for Akron.
How It Happened
After falling behind 7-4, Akron went on a 9-0 run with 7:20 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from McGuff, to take a 13-7 lead. The Zips entered the second quarter down 22-21 before facing a 43-37 halftime deficit.
Kent State increased its lead after halftime, building a 58-46 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a basket from sophomore Izzy Callaway (Copley, Ohio), to trim its deficit to 58-51 with 2:56 to go in the third. Kent State countered and stretched its lead to 65-54 heading into the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 17 points in the paint.
Kent State kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 78-64 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 78-69 with 3:26 to go in the contest. Kent State responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 91-79. Akron took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring 16 of its 25 points in the paint.
