Softball to Face Non-Conference Opponents for Midweek Games

AKRON, Ohio – On Tuesday and Wednesday this week, the Akron softball team will have three non-conference games. They'll first host Pittsburgh on April 9th at Lee R. Jackson Field before they head on the road to Dayton, Ohio to face the Flyers on the 10th for a doubleheader.

Scouting Pittsburgh & Dayton
The Pitt Panthers come to Ohio with an 11-25 mark on the season. This past weekend, they took a series from Boston College winning two of three including a 4-0 shutout in the series opener. Olivia Stefanoni tossed a complete game in the shutout as she didn't allow a run, a walk, or a hit by pitch while only allowing five hits in 25 batters faced. She has now struck out a team-high 51 batters on the year. Kylie Griggs finished the doubleheader going a combined 3-for-6 with four RBI, a double and two home runs, including the game winning home run in game two. Griggs has 9 home runs on the year while teammate Cai Compson has hit ten out of the park.
Dayton has an 18-14 record on the year and are coming off a three-game weekend series at Massachusetts in which they swept the doubleheader and lost the final game. Maddie Kapsimalis leads the Flyers with a .371 batting average with a team-high 36 hits including 5 home-runs. She has also driven in 32 runs while drawing a team high 21 walks. Emily Daniel has 20 stolen bases on 21 attempts as a base runner. On the rubber for Dayton, Izzy Kemp has a team-high 83 strikeouts while only walking 21 batters and allowing 55 hits. She has a 2.19 ERA on the season with seven complete games.
Scouting Akron
Akron won a series over Bowling Green over the weekend defeating the Falcons 4-2 and 7-5 before falling 7-6 in the final game of the weekend to bring their season record to 16-19 and a 7-5 mark against conference opponents. Meagan Lee leads the Zips with a .425 batting average and 51 hits on the season. Brooke Sivek has scored 20 runs with her .402 on base percentage and has drawn a team high 20 walks. With 24 RBI, Sophia Wygast has driven in the most runs on the Akron roster this season with her 25 hits including 7 home runs. In the circle, Macy Walters has struck out 38 batters and has a 3.56 ERA and has only allowed 79 hits, both of which are the best marks for Akron pitchers.

- The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 31 years after joining the league in 1993 from the North Star Conference.
- Under second-year head coach Craig Nicholson, the Zips return 10 players from the 2023 squad and added 12 newcomers to the 2024 roster.
- The 2023 season marks the 48th season of intercollegiate competition for the Akron softball program.
