Zips Split Doubleheader with Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- The Akron Zips split with the Youngstown State Penguins on Tuesday afternoon in a mid-week doubleheader. YSU took game one with a score of 5-3 before the Zips took game two 10-8 on the back of fourteen Akron hits.
GAME 2 | Akron 10, Youngstown State 8
Senior Cailey Joyce (5-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Akron (8-12). The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, on four hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
In addition to her four hits, Sivek had an RBI to lead the Zips. Senior Tiffany Stevens put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Meagan Lee also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a home run and three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the board immediately, starting their scoring in the top of the first inning. Akron scored twice in the inning on run-scoring doubles from freshman Morgan Sizemore and freshman Lily Sullivan.
The Zips then held the Penguins scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. The Akron offense exploded for six runs, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Lee and a two-run double from Stevens, which brought the Zips lead to 8-0.
Youngstown State narrowed Akron's lead to 8-6 before the Zips stretched the advantage to 10-6 in the seventh inning. Akron added two runs, including one on a solo homer off the bat of Stevens. Youngstown State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Akron still held on for the 10-8 win.
GAME NOTES
» Sivek collected four hits in game two and stole two bases.
» Joyce struck out five Penguins hitters.
» The Zips power output was led by Stevens, who picked up two extra base hits in the ballgame while going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.
» Lee and Stevens drove in three runs each for the Zips.
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed six runs across.
» Akron grabbed a 2-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Zips out-hit the Penguins at a 14-8 clip.
» Akron went 8-for-17 (.471) with runners in scoring position.
» Akron pitchers faced 36 Youngstown State hitters in the game, allowing 10 ground balls and six fly balls while striking out five.

Freshman Delaney Jenkinson went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, but the Akron Zips still came up short in game one on Tuesday, and lost to the Youngstown State Penguins by a final of 5-3.
Jenkinson led the way offensively for the Zips, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Meagan Lee put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Brooke Sivek also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Akron.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the third inning. Akron scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run homer from Jenkinson. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Youngstown State scored five times over the remaining four innings to grab the 5-3 win.

Akron welcomes Toledo to Lee R. Jackson Field for the home opener and Mid-American Conference weekend series on Friday and Saturday, March 15-16. The Zips are scheduled to play a single game at 3 p.m. on Friday and a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. and approximately 3:30 p.m.
