Akron Rallies for 4-2 Walk-Off Win Over Toledo

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron softball team rallied to score two runs in their final at-bat and walked it off on freshman Sophia Wygast's (Toledo, Ohio) two-run home run to pick up the 4-2 win over Toledo in the Mid-American Conference openers for both schools on Friday (March 15) at Lee R. Jackson Field.
Wygast led the way offensively for the Zips, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run, a walk and two RBI. Junior Alexis Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) furnished a noteworthy effort as well, going 3-for-4 with three doubles. Freshman Delaney Jenkinson (Holly, Mich.) also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Akron with a double, a walk and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips trailed 1-0 in the fourth inning when a one-out RBI double from Jenkinson tied the game at one.
The Rockets broke the tie with a single tally in the top of the fifth inning. Akron responded in the bottom of the frame when freshman Hailee Sanchez (Hutto, Texas), who pinch ran after a double from Campbell, came across to score on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Macy Walters (Johnstown, Ohio) to plate the tying run.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Akron after a lead-off double from Campbell, walked it off on Wygast's two-out two-run home run, her team-leading fifth long ball of the season.
GAME NOTES
» Campbell picked up three base hits in the game for Akron.
» Akron got a great power hitting day from Campbell, who reached safely with three extra-base hits.
» The Zips out-hit the Rockets at a 9-5 clip.
» Walters faced 27 Toledo hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and eight fly balls, while striking out one.
» The Zips drew four walks.
» Wygast led the Zips at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
» Toledo was led offensively by Eli Enriquez, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Akron and Toledo close out their series with a doubleheader on Saturday (March 16) at Lee R. Jackson Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
