Akron Splits Twinbill with Toledo

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron softball team split a doubleheader with Toledo on Saturday (March 16) at Lee R. Jackson Field, winning the nightcap, 2-1, in 10 innings, after falling in the opener, 6-2.

Akron needed 10 innings to get the job done, but pulled off the 2-1 extra-innings win, walking it off on junior Autumn Bailey's (Shiloh, Ohio) double to claim victory over Toledo.
Freshman Macy Walters (Johnstown, Ohio) (2-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Akron going 2.2 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing one walk and striking out two. Senior Cailey Joyce (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) also made an impact in the circle for the Zips, starting the ballgame and throwing 7.1 innings, giving up one run on seven hits, with one walk and two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Zips were paced by freshman Delaney Jenkinson (Holly, Mich.), who went 1-for-4 on the day with a double and an RBI. Bailey compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI. Senior Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) also contributed for Akron, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate, while adding a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning when they tied the game thanks to Jenkinson's RBI double with one out.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 10th, when Akron walked it off on Bailey's one-out RBI double.
GAME NOTES
» Jenkinson stole two bases in Saturday's second game.
» Akron pitchers faced 43 Toledo hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and 16 fly balls while striking out four.

The Akron Zips had a tough showing on Saturday, falling to Toledo, 6-2, in the opener despite the efforts of sophomore Abigail Scheller (North Hills, Pa.), who went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.
Sophomore Haley Croyle (Hubbard, Ohio) got the ball to start for Akron and took the loss. Joyce was a bright spot for the Zips, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 3.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit, with one walk and two strikeouts.
Scheller led the way offensively for the Zips, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Brooke Sivek (Boerne, Texas) provided a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 6-0 in the fifth inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron plated two runs when Scheller left the yard with freshman Lily Sullivan (Carmel, Ind.) aboard. The Zips were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
