Softball Heads on the Road for a Pair of Non-Conference Games

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips softball team will head to Moon Township, Penn. for a doubleheader against Robert Morris University on Tuesday afternoon.

Scouting Robert Morris
Robert Morris comes into Tuesday 4-13 on the year and off a 1-2 series against Green Bay to open Horizon League play. The Colonials last game in the conference opener was a walk-off win off Charolette Grover's single in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 7-6 over Green Bay for their first home victory of the season. Catalina Saxen, Alaina Koutsogiani, and Anna Resnik all have 12 hits on the year. Koutsogiani has two home runs and 8 RBI. Kailani Tatro has the lowest ERA for Robert Morris at 3.17 in her 17.2 innings of work. Madison DeVault has struck out 29 batters in 37 innings and has a 4.73 ERA in the circle.

Akron has a slight 10-8 lead in the series and has won the last seven in a row. The most recent matchup came on March 21, 2023 where the Zips had a 13-4 victory at home behind a nine-run third inning.

Scouting Akron
The Zips are coming off a 2-1 weekend series against Toledo for their MAC and home opener. The Zips took games one and three against the Rockets both in walk-off form. Game one's 4-2 victory was finalized with Sophia Wygast's two-run home run while game three's 2-1 victory came in the tenth inning with Autumn Bailey's double. Toledo took the first game in Saturday's doubleheader by a score of 6-2. The Zips are led offensively by Meagan Lee with a.368 batting average and has a team best 28 hits on the season. Brooke Sivek follows with 19 hits and has drawn 15 walks on the season. Including her two-run game winning home run, Wygast now leads the team with 5 home runs and has tallied 16 RBI. In the circle, Macy Walters has made 14 appeaarences for the Zips and is allowing the least amount of opponent hits of the three Akron starters. Cailey Joyce has the best ERA on the team – 3.89 – in her 13 appearances and has struck out a team-high 24 batters. Haley Croyle has 21 strikeouts and 20 walks in her 13 appearances.

Akron Notes

The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 31 years after joining the league in 1993 from the North Star Conference.
Under second-year head coach Craig Nicholson, the Zips return 10 players from the 2023 squad and added 12 newcomers to the 2024 roster.
The 2023 season marks the 48th season of intercollegiate competition for the Akron softball program.

The Zips will be back home at Lee R. Jackson Field for another three game series against a MAC opponent, Northern Illinois. Friday March 22 will be a single 7-inning game beginning at 3 p.m. and there will be a doubleheader on Saturday with first pitch of game one scheduled for 1 p.m.
