Akron Drops 60-51 Decision at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The University of Akron women's basketball team came up short in a 60-51 loss at Western Michigan on Wednesday (Jan. 24).
Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) led the Zips with 13 points and two steals. Junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) also tacked on eight points and nine rebounds, while freshman Teniesha Clarke (Burlington, Ohio) helped out with seven points.
Bass pulled down two offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up 11 offensive boards and turned the caroms into eight second-chance points.
The Akron defense caused its share of mistakes in Wednesday's game, forcing 15 Western Michigan turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 10 points on the offensive end of the floor. Haney's two steals led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
Akron struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-8 at the end of the first quarter before facing a 35-17 halftime deficit.
Western Michigan continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 38-19 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run to trim its deficit to 38-24 with 6:20 to go in the third. Western Michigan countered and stretched its lead to 48-30 heading into the fourth. Akron's bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled four of the team's 13 third-quarter points.
Akron narrowed its deficit to 58-42 before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by sophomore Lanae Riley's (Akron, Ohio) three, to shrink the deficit to 58-51 with 24 seconds to go in the contest. Western Michigan responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 60-51. Akron took advantage of six Western Michigan turnovers in the quarter, scoring eight points off of those takeaways.
