Akron Earns Come-From-Behind 61-59 Win at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. - The University of Akron women's basketball team earned a come-from-behind 61-59 road victory over Northern Illinois on Saturday (Jan. 27).
The Zips had two players score in double figures, led by junior Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio), who had her league-leading 11th double-double of the season with a 15-point and 13-rebound performance. Redshirt senior Morgan Haney (Piqua, Ohio) tacked on 10 points, while junior Alexus Mobley (Indianapolis, Ind.) added nine points and six rebounds.
Led by Mobley's three offensive rebounds, Akron did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 10 boards that resulted in 15 second-chance points.
Akron's defense held Northern Illinois to only 33.3 percent shooting from the field. The Zips also limited the Huskies' leading scorer Jayden Marable to 1-of-13 shooting and two points in the game.
How It Happened
After falling behind 12-4, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 5:47 left in the first quarter, culminating in a bucket from sophomore Lanae Riley (Akron, Ohio), to narrow its deficit to 12-11. Northern Illinois answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Zips down 19-13 entering the second quarter.
Akron kept the Huskies from increasing their lead before going on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a bucket from Bass, to narrow its deficit to 23-22. Northern Illinois responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Zips trailing 28-26 heading into halftime.
Akron came out of halftime on fire, going on an 8-0 run as apart of an overall 12-0 streak, punctuated by a three from Haney, to grab a 34-28 lead with 8:08 to go in the third. Before the third period was over, the Zips added four points to that lead and entered the fourth quarter with a 52-42 edge after shooting nearly 69 percent (.688) from the field (11-of-16). Akron knocked down four three-pointers in the quarter to score 12 of its 26 total points.
The Zips then held on in a back-and-forth final period for the victory.
