Boilermakers Claim Three Games after Zips Opening Win

Holly Springs, N.C. – The Akron baseball opened the third series of the season with a 2-1 win over Purdue, but the Boilermakers claimed the last three games of the series 17-9, 13-0 and 23-4 at Ting Stadium over the weekend.

Sophomore OF Ian Pennington (Springboro, Ohio) led the Zips offense, registering a .364 batting average recording four hits in 11 at bats. He posted a .455 slugging percentage and reached base seven times with a double, five total bases, three runs scored, two RBI, two walks and a hit by pitch.

Sophomore OF/IF Sam Seeker (Norton, Ohio) followed with three hits, including a pair of doubles and a homerun for two RBI and two runs scored. Five Zips followed with a pair of hits as sophomore Michael Sprockett (West Chester, Ohio) drove in both runs in the series opener with a homerun and sacrifice flyout. Freshman C Ethan Schimony (State College, Pa.), senior IF Nick Arrivo (Ann Arbor, Mich.), junior IF DJ Butler (Chicago, Ill.) and sophomore C Andrew Horvath (Aurora, Ohio) all added two hits each.

Junior P Sammy Tortorella (Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the win for the Zips, posting a 1.12 ERA in eight innings of work. He faced 33, allowing only five hits and one run, striking out five batters and walking one, while throwing 98 pitches and 63 for strikes. Freshman Emmett Gillies (Columbus, Ohio) earned the save, striking out one batter coupled with a groundout and pop out.

Akron is scheduled to host the Mid-American Conference opening series on Friday through Saturday, March 10-12 against Eastern Michigan at Skeeles Field. On Friday, The Zips and the Eagles are scheduled to battle at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
