What's Ahead
The University of Akron baseball team opens Mid-American Conference play against Eastern Michigan as the Zips host the Eagles at Skeeles Field in home debut on Friday-Sunday, March 10-12 at Skeeles Field. The three-game league series is slated for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Friday followed by a 2 p.m. start on Saturday and 1 p.m. slate for Sunday. All times are subject to change. The Zips enter MAC play with a 4-7 overall mark, spitting the season-opening series 2-2 with Western Carolina and claiming one game against Elon (1-of-3) and Purdue (1-of-4). Sophomore OF Ian Pennington leads the Zips offense with an .333 batting average with a team-best 13 hits, including four doubles, a triple and homerun. He also leads the squad in RBI (9) and runs scored (7), while owning a .409 on base percentage. Jack Firestone and Michael Sprockett follow with seven RBI as Firestone leads the squad with four home runs and nine total hits. Sprockett has seven hits with two doubles and a bomb. Sammy Tortorella paces the pitching staff with a 3.86 ERA and 1.29 WHIP. In 16.1 innings pitched, he allowed 16 hits and five walks while collecting 11 strikeouts.

The Eagles enter league play with a 6-4 overall record after sweeping four games in last weekend's series against Towson. EMU has three players hitting over .300 led by Cory Taylor with a .400 batting average. Taylor owns a second-best 12 hits with three doubles and a homerun for five RBI and 18 total bases with eight runs scored. Taylor Hopkins also distributed 12 hits. Leading the hit category for EMU is Josh Kross with 13 while generating a a second-best .371 batting average. Thomas House and Luke Russo combine for 25.2 of the Eagles 89 innings pitched. Kross (13.0 IP) owns a team-low 4.15 ERA and 1.77 WHIP with a 1-1 record. He has 12 strikeouts and 12 walks. Russo follows (12.2 IP) and a 1-0 record. He fanned a team-best 15 batters while walking six.
