Phillips Collects Three Hits in Loss to Miami (OH)

AKRON, Ohio --The Akron Zips got a boost from Kelton Phillips, who collected three hits in a 17-6 loss to the Miami (OH) RedHawks Thursday.
In addition to his three hits, Phillips had a walk to lead the Zips. Easton Amundson put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-3 with a home run, a walk and two RBIs. Blake Bowen also chipped in for Akron, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a home run, two walks and an RBI.
John Allen (2-6) got the ball to start for Akron (21-32, 11-20) and took the loss. Landon Vandegrift was a bright spot for the Zips, coming out of the bullpen and throwing six innings, giving up two runs, all earned, on three hits, with three walks and three strikeouts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips were trailing 8-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Akron got an RBI single from Brody Chrisman, scoring Phillips from second base.
The Zips kept the RedHawks off the board before narrowing the gap further in the fourth. Akron picked up a run on Bowen's one-out solo home run off of Zac Sohosky, which tightened the RedHawks lead to 8-2.
Akron held the RedHawks off the board before narrowing the gap to 8-5 in the fifth. The Zips scored three runs in the frame, two of them coming across on a two-run homer from Amundson.
The RedHawks expanded their lead to 10-5 before the Akron offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the seventh. Amundson crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Zips, bringing the score to 10-6 in favor of Miami (OH). The Zips were unable to get any closer, as Miami (OH) added seven runs to their tally on the way to a 17-6 final.
