Akron Secures Series Sweep Over Buffalo

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zips softball team (16-24, 11-8 MAC) completed the series sweep over Buffalo on Wednesday afternoon after Akron secured a 4-0 shutout victory, before completing the sweep with a 13-9 win.
GM 1: Akron 4, Buffalo 0
Laurel DeVoe (North Canton, Ohio) got the Zips on the board after she homered to centerfield in the bottom of the second inning to give Akron a 1-0 lead.
The Zips were able to plate three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning that extended their lead to 4-0. Tiffany Stevens (Toledo, Ohio) hit a 2-RBI single to centerfield scoring Autumn Bailey (Ashland, Ohio) and Carley Auten (Pickerington, Ohio). Shelby Fortune (Grafton, Ohio), who went 2-for-3 on the day, hit an RBI single that put gave Akron its fourth run.
In the circle, Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) gets the win after she pitched a complete game and only gave up two hits for the shutout. She allowed one walk and struck out eight batters.
GM 2: Akron 13, Buffalo 9
Akron scored four runs in the first inning to take a 4-0 nothing lead. DeVoe drew a walk with bases loaded to get the first run across, before Stevens hit an RBI single. Madison Dudek (Uniontown, Ohio) hit a 2-RBI double to left field.
The Bulls answered quickly by scoring four runs in the second inning that tied the game at 4-4. The Zips put together a 4-run second inning starting with Lexi Campbell (Indianapolis, Ind.) doubled to centerfield and scored a run. Kalli Macintosh-Houlder (Mississauga, Ont.) singled to the shortstop and scored Campbell before Stevens hit a sac fly to right field and brought a runner home. Dudek singled to third allowing Macintosh-Houlder to score and put the Zips ahead, 8-4.
Jaiden Bryant (Hilliard, Ohio) blasted a 2-run homer in the third inning, before Fortune drew a walk with bases loaded to extend Akron's lead to 12-4.
Buffalo added three runs in the fourth and a single run in the fifth from a solo homer that closed the Zips' lead to 12-8.
In the fifth inning, a sacrifice fly from Dudek gave the Akron its 13th run of the game putting the Zips ahead, 13-8. The Bulls hit another homer in the seventh inning, but the Zips would hold on and secure the 13-9 victory.
Olivia Stefanoni (Hudson, Ohio) gets her second win of the season after pitching 3.0 innings.
Akron will travel to Bowling Green over the weekend for a series starting on Saturday, April 23 with a doubleheader with the first game starting at 1 p.m. The Zips will close out the series on Sunday, April 24 with a noon first pitch.
