BOXSCORE (PDF)
AKRON, OHIO – Playing for the first time in nine days, the Akron women's basketball team started strong, but ultimately fell to visiting Cleveland State (9-1) by a score of 76-58 on Sunday afternoon at James A. Rhodes Arena.
Senior G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) directed Akron's offensive efforts with a team-high 14 points, while senior G Dominique Camp (Dayton, Ohio) chipped in 12 points and junior G Alexis Stewart (Hamilton, Ontario) tallied nine in the setback.
The Zips (5-2) finished the evening shooting 36.5 percent from the field and connected on 11 three pointers, while the Vikings connected on 40 percent of their attempts from the floor. On the night, Cleveland State outrebounded Akron, 44-35.
Both sides came out looking to fire away from long range, as the Zips and Vikings combined to hoist 14 first-quarter three-point attempts. Akron proved on target in the period, making four of its eight triple tries. Six turnovers slowed the offense, but balance prevailed as six different Zips made a field goal in the opening stanza.
The Vikings were able to gain separation in the second frame, doubling up Akron 24-12 to head to the locker room with a 43-29 halftime advantage. Stewart's nine first-half points led the Zips, with all of them coming on three pointers. Seven of Akron's nine field goals before the half came from long distance and for the game, 11 of its makes were triples.
Despite that outside shooting and holding the visitors to 40-percent marksmanship from the field, the Zips couldn't find traction offensively to rally in the second half. A 14-7 burst to begin the fourth quarter brought Akron within 16, 68-52, before the Vikings closed the game en route to the triumph.
Destiny Leo paced Cleveland State with a game-high 21 points and had support from Brittni More with 16 in the win.
