Oakland Edges Akron in Season Opener, 74-67

ROCHESTER, Mich. – The University of Akron women's basketball battled down to the wire at Oakland on Monday, Nov. 7, before the Golden Grizzlies exited the season opener for both schools with a 74-67 triumph.
Sophomore Reagan Bass (Strongsville, Ohio) paced three Akron players registering double-figure scoring efforts with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Senior Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and redshirt junior Layne Ferrell (Franklin, Ohio) added 15 and 11 points, respectively. Senior Molly Neitzel (Rocky River, Ohio) added an eight-point and team-high eight-rebound outing for the Zips.
Kennedy Mondue led four Golden Grizzlies finishing in double-figures with a game-high 21-point performance.
The Zips capped the evening shooting nearly 51 percent (.509) from the floor, including connecting on six three pointers. Akron turned in a strong defensive effort limiting Oakland to a .379 shooting mark. The difference in the contest came at the charity stripe where the Golden Grizzlies were 23-of-31, while the Zips went to the line eight times, converting on five attempts.
Akron posted advantages on the evening in rebounding (34-33), assists (19-11), points in the paint (36-20) and blocked shots (3-0), while Oakland tallied a 22-11 edge in points off turnovers.
