Zips Battle but Fall Short to Ohio

AKRON, Ohio- The Akron women's soccer team (2-8, 0-2 MAC) fell in a close match up against Ohio, 1-0, on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Zips battled to the final seconds, but Ohio (6-3, 2-0 MAC) secured the win.

"This was another hard-fought MAC game," commented head coach Noreen Herlihy. "These players gave it everything and as a team, we did a lot of things better than the last game and will continue to keep building on that. There are a lot of games left to play, and we look forward to Thursday against Miami."

Akron and Ohio battled back and forth defensively the entirety of the first half, with the Zips trying to get the offensive push started. The Zips recorded four shots in the first half and had two corner kicks. Neither team found the back of the goal in the opening half.

The Bobcats struck 50 seconds into the second half when Shae Robertson found the back of the net and took a 1-0 lead, sealing the win for Ohio.

Junior Sydney Worthy (Groveport, Ohio) led the Zips' offensive efforts with firing off four of Akron's 10 shots, with one on goal, while freshman Calli Swisher (Pittsburgh, Ohio) and junior Carly Pcholinsky (South Park, Pa.) both added two shots.

For the game, the Zips attempted six corners, while Ohio did not attempt one.

In goal, freshman Penelope Cuirinier (Mionnay, France) registered a game-high five saves.

Akron will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 30 when the Zips host Miami (OH) for a 7 p.m. contest at FirstEnergy Stadium.
