MADEIRA BEACH, Fla.– On day one of the Maderia Beach Tournament in sunny Florida, the Akron softball team split its pair of contests defeating South Dakota in game one before falling to the Mercer Bears in game two.Â
Â
The Akron offense picked up where it left off from one week ago to direct the Zips to a tournament-opening victory and their second W of the season as UA dominated South Dakota, 16-6, on the strength of a season-high 17 hits and five home runs.Â
Â
Five different Zips circled the bases on one swing of the bat including redshirt junior Sydney Jascoe (Commerce, Mich.), junior Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio), senior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio), senior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.), and freshman Tiffany Stevens (Grafton, Ohio). Jascoe notched her MAC leading fourth home run, while Stevens tallied the first of her career.Â
Â
The duo of Jascoe and Mitchiner combined to record 10 RBI in the ball game, which tied a career-high for Jascoe (5) and set a new career mark for Mitchiner (5). Additionally, Holzman's three-RBI performance matched her career-high.Â
Â
Inside the circle, redshirt freshman Lauren Frigyes (Paris, Ohio) picked up her first career Akron victory. Frigyes entered the contest in the fourth inning and pitched 1.1 innings while allowing one hit. Sophomore Lexie Petrof (Ligonier, Pa.) earned her first career save in the contest after pitching the final 1.2 innings, allowed just one hits, no runs, and struck out a pair.Â
Â
Akron scored a minimum of one run in every inning but the first. The Zips got on the board first in the second, broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth with a four-run inning, and scored a combined nine runs in the final two to close out the contest in six innings due to the NCAA run rule.Â
Â
Mitchiner single-handedly drove in the Zips first three runs hitting a two-run home run in second and drew a RBI walk in the third.Â
Â
As the game entered the fourth inning tied at three, the Zips offense took off which included a game-high six-run fifth that saw two of the team's five home runs.Â
Â
Akron and Mercer battled in the nightcap but the Bears came out on top, 10-7, scoring the game-winning runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.Â
Â
The game saw five lead changes, 17 combined runs, and 26 combined hits. All seven of the Zips runs came courtesy of the long ball off the bats of Jascoe, twice, and Bryant. The pair homered in back-to-back games while Jascoe has now homered in three straight games and five of UA's seven contests and Bryant connected on back-to-back jacks for the first time in her career.Â
Â
Jascoe cleared the bases with a three-run blast in the third to put the Zips in front, 3-1, Bryant's solo shot in the sixth cut Akron's deficit down to one run, 5-4, and Jascoe's third homer of the day, second of the game, handed UA a 7-6 advantage.Â
Akron is back on the field on Saturday, Feb. 15, for day two of the Madeira Beach tournament. The Zips are scheduled to square off against Central Arkansas (4 p.m.) and Georgia State (6:30 p.m.
