The University of Akron women's basketball team hits the road for the first time during the 2020-21 campaign this Sunday, Dec. 6, as the Zips visit Dayton. The showdown with the Flyers is set for 2 p.m. at University of Dayton Arena and will be broadcast on ESPN+ as well as 640 WHLO AM with Bill Morgan calling the action.

Akron and Dayton are meeting for the ninth time in program history, with the Flyers owning a 8-0 series edge following a 94-80 victory over the Zips on Nov. 15, 2013.

SCOUTING DAYTON
Dayton enters play this Sunday following a 71-57 victory at Morehead State on Nov. 25. The Flyers were 25-8 a season ago en route to capturing the Atlantic-10 regular season title.
In Dayton's season-opening win versus Morehead State, senior F Erin Whalen paced the Flyers' attack with a 25-point effort, while senior G Araion Bradshaw and freshman C Tenin Magassa added 15 and 10 points, respectively. Dayton finished the contest connecting on 45.5 percent of its attempts, going 25-55 from the field, while outrebounding Morehead State, 42-41.
Dayton is rated second in the NCAA in three-point defense (8.3), eighth in blocked shots per game (7.0) and 23rd in fewest turnovers (16).
IN OUR LAST MEETING (NOV. 15, 2013 - DAYTON, OHIO)
Despite a strong first-half showing and a career performance from Hanna Luburgh, the University Akron women's basketball team fell short against No. 23/21 Dayton on Nov. 15, 2013, 94-80.
Luburgh led all scorers with a career-high 37 points for Akron, shooting 13-for-21 from the field and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. She also pulled down 11 rebounds.
Rachel Tecca posted 25 points and eight rebounds, and Anita Brown rounded out the primary scoring effort for the Zips with 10 points.
Akron's offensive production was choppy due to an uncharacteristic 3-for-22 showing from long range. The Zips struggled to maintain a presence in the battle of the boards, trailing Dayton by 20 rebounds.
No. 23/21 Dayton was led by Cassie Sant's 24 points and Amber Deane's 23, as four of the Flyers' starters registered double figures.
After a slow start that saw them in a 7-0 hole, the Zips came alive midway through the first half when a 3-point bucket from Luburgh cut the deficit to one at 22-21.
The Zips took their first lead of the night at with 1:35 left in the opening period on two free throws from Luburgh. The senior tied the game at 41 just a minute earlier after she converted a three-point play.
Akron's defense suffocated the passing lanes and forced 16 Dayton turnovers in the first half. The Zips held the Flyers scoreless for the last 3:28 of the period, paving the way for a 9-0 run that gave Akron a four-point lead at the break, 45-41.
Akron was unable to carry its momentum through the intermission, starting the second half in Dayton's wake and falling victim to a 21-4 run over the first five minutes. The Flyers' lead grew to as many as 18 with 11:09 left in the game, but the Zips slowly began to chip away.
Akron went on a 10-0 run that was capped by a pair of free throws from Brown to make it an eight-point game at 79-71 at the 4:39 mark. But that is as close a the Zips would come, as Dayton connected on 11-of-13 free throw attempts over the course of the last three minutes to preserve its lead.

Senior F Jordyn Dawson (Huntington, W.Va.) and sophomore G Rachel Martindale (Pittsburgh, Pa.) led a trio of Zips scoring in double figures with 17 points apiece, while sophomore F Lonasia Brewer (Akron, Ohio) added 11 points.

Martindale finished the contest with career-high marks in scoring (17), three-pointers (5) and rebounds (4), while Dawson pulled down a team-high eight rebounds and equaled a career-best with three blocked shots.

Akron concluded the evening shooting nearly 45 percent (.446) from the field, including connecting on seven three-pointers. The Zips held the Norse to a 36.7 percent shooting effort and registered a 27-13 advantage off turnovers after forcing Northern Kentucky into 19 miscues.
