Zips Softball Drops Two At Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic

MARTIN, Tenn.– On the final day of the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic and the Zips last time competing in tournament play during the 2019 regular-season, the Akron softball team suffered an 8-2 loss to Green Bay and a 5-2 setback against tournament host, UT Martin, on Sunday.Â

Akron now heads into Mid-American Conference play with a record of 6-11-2.Â

For the second time on the weekend, the Akron offense struck first against Green Bay. After senior Jordan Crews (Waco, Ga.) singled up the middle to lead off the inning and was moved over on a SAC bunt, the speedy outfielder stole third and advanced home on a throwing error by the Phoenix catcher.Â

Green Bay went on to score eight unanswered runs in the final four innings to claim an 8-1 advantage heading into the Zips final at-bats.Â

Down to their last three outs of the game, the Zips tallied its final run of the game courtesy of an RBI single by junior Jessie Holzman (Medina, Ohio).Â

In the contest, Akron notched three hits off the bats of Crews, Holzman, and sophomore Kayla Wulf (Maumee, Ohio).

Akron went toe-to-toe against UT Martin to close out tournament play in game two, with the Skyhawks coming out on top, 5-2.Â

UT Martin scored its five runs of the contest in the second and third inning as Akron looked up at a 5-1 deficit after three innings of play.

Junior Macky Mitchiner (Riverside, Calif.) led off the top of the third inning with a single to left field, stole second, and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Camryn Michallas (Huntington, W. Va.) laid down a perfect bunt, reached safely and allowed Mitchiner to score from third.Â

Akron's second run of the contest came in the fifth inning on back-to-back doubles in the first two at-bats. Senior Laura Lakins (Akron, Ohio) doubled to left-center, freshman Morgan Cadmus (Tecumseh, Mich.) pinch ran for Lakins, and Mitchiner immediately doubled to right picking up an RBI. Â

In the ballgame, Mitchiner went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored while Michallas went a perfect 2-for-2 and notched her fourth RBI of the season. Lakins and Wulf each recorded a hit in the contest against the Skyhawks to round out the Zips six hits.Â
Inside the circle, junior Adrian Smith (St. Clairsville, Ohio) entered the game out of the bullpen and tossed three scoreless innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out two.Â

With the conclusion of tournament play, the Akron softball team sets its sights on Mid-American Conference play as the Zips head to Muncie, Ind. The 2019 league season begins on Friday, March 22, as the Zips take on Ball State on at 3 p.m. Akron and the Cardinals meet again on Saturday, March 23, for a doubleheader to round out the three-game series.
