What's Ahead
The Akron women's basketball team looks to continue rolling in non-conference action as the Zips try to extend its win streak to three games when UA travels to Cleveland State. The Zips and Vikings tip-off from inside the Wolstein Center in downtown Cleveland at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27. All the action can be seen live on ESPN+ or heard on Fox Sports 1350 with Bill Morgan on the call.
Scouting the Vikings
Cleveland State owns an identical record as Akron through five games at 4-1 heading into Wednesday. Following a season-opening loss to Mid-American Conference opponent, Bowling Green (89-62). Since then, CSU has rattled off four straight victories including a W over Davis & Elkins (110-41), LIU (79-49), Hofstra (61-51), and St. Bonaventure (65-62). The Vikings are preparing for just their second home game of the season and stand 1-0 at the Wolstein Center. Â
Two Vikings direct the offensive attack for Cleveland State in senior forward Mariah Miller and junior guard Mariah White as the pair of Mariah's are averaging double figures in scoring through five contests. Miller paces all CSU players in scoring with a team-high 21.8 points per game (109 total points), pulls down 6.2 rebounds per contest, is shooting 54.1-percent (40-for-74) from the floor and 45-percent from long range. In five starts, Miller owns 16.2 points per game and a team-best 4.4 assists per contest (22 total), while on the defensive end of the floor has recorded a team-high 22 steals. When crashing the boards, sophomore forward Savanna Crockett is the Vikings team-leader pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game, including 20 defensive boards and 11 offensive caroms.Â
In the NCAA, Cleveland State ranks in the top-50 in seven categories including; eighth in three-point field goal percentage, 25th in steals per game, 26th in fewest fouls (61), 28th in blocked shots and blocks per game, 34th in steals, 48th in scoring margin.Â

Akron and Cleveland State have a long history going head-to-head in each program's respective histories since the inaugural meeting in 1975. In 41 contests between the Zips and Vikings, CSU holds a 25-17 all-time series record against UA. The Zips have won two straight against Cleveland State dating back to 2010 and have secured three victories in the past five meetings. When playing at the Wolstein Center in its last six match-ups, Akron is 3-3.Â

CSU: Chris Kielsmeir is in his second season at the helm of the Cleveland State women's basketball program. After becoming the seventh head coach in program history, Kielsmeir led the Vikings to a 10-20 overall record, mentored the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, and a First Team All-League selection.Â
Akron: Melissa Jackson begins her second season at the helm of the Akron women's basketball program. In her debut season, Jackson led the Zips to a 19-15 overall record, a 7-11 MAC ledger, improved by seven wins overall and +4 in conference victories. Jackson's squad became just the eighth team in program history to win at least 16 games in a season. Â

The Zips have been a member of the Mid-American Conference for the past 28 years after joining the league in 1992 from the North Star Conference.

- The 2019-20 season marks the 46th season of competition for the Akron women's basketball program.Â
- Junior Jordyn Dawson and two freshmen, Rachel Martindale and Lonasia Brewer, made their respective collegiate debuts against St. Bonaventure. Martindale played 15 minutes and scored two points while Brewers saw more minutes of action.Â
- Dawson provided a big spark for the Zips in her Akron debut. JD scored 10 points, grabbed five rebounds, and was +25 in +/- when on the court.Â
- Akron picked up its first victory of the season against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 63-54. The win marked the sixth time since 2012-13 that Akron captured a win in the season opener.Â
- Shaunay Edmonds recorded the first double-double of her career scoring 20 points and tallying a career-high 10 steals, including 5 steals in the fourth quarter alone.Â
- Haliegh Reineohl posted her team-leading 25th career double-double (12 points, 11 rebounds).Â
- Forward Caitlin Vari eclipsed the 500 career point mark against St. Bonaventure with her 13 point effort.Â
- In the fourth quarter against St. Bonaventure, Akron outscored the Bonnies 20-4 and scored 17 unanswered points in the final six minutes of the game.Â
- The Zips went to the free-throw line 31 times against St. Bonaventure and connected on 25 attempts. Akron fell two made free throws shy of tying the 10th most free throws made in a single-game.Â
- Defensively, UA limited St. Bonaventure to a game-low four points in the quarter as the Bonnies shot 1-for-13, committed seven turnovers, and Edmonds single-handedly ripped five steals.Â
- Jordyn Dawson registered her first career double-double in an Akron uniform against Fort Wayne while Haliegh Reinoehl notched back-to-back double-doubles to start the season.Â
- UA grabbed a season-high 41 team rebounds, including 14 offensive boards. Dawson and Reinoehl accounted for 24 of the Zips rebounds.Â
- Against the Mastodons, UA scored 34 points in the paint, 20 points in the paint, and the Zips contributed 23 points.Â
- The Zips led for 30:40 of the game against Purdue Fort Wayne and led by as many as +11.
- Akron captured two straight wins to begin the season in back-to-back campaigns.Â
- Against Michigan, four Akron players scored in double figures including Haliegh Reinoehl (14), Jordyn Dawson (13), Shayna Harmon (13), Rachel Martindale (12).Â

- For the second time in two games, 11 players who checked into the game scored a minimum one point in the contests against YSU and Detroit. A season-high 12 players scored in the Zips win against the Penguins.

History in The Making
91 is the magic number for senior Shaunay Edmonds. The Zips point guard is 91 points away from becoming the 16th player in Akron women's basketball history to eclipse the 1,000 career point mark. Edmonds would be the second Zip in as many seasons to reach the career milestone as Megan Sefcik etched her name in program history in 2018-19 and ended her career with 1,038 points.Â
Inside The Paint
Akron has been strong inside the paint through five games of the 2019-20 season. In total, the Zips have scored 166 points in the interior, is averaging 33.2 points in the paint per game, and scored a season-high 40 points inside against Detroit. On the year, Akron is shooting 52.2-percent (83-for-159) when inside the paint.Â
