AKRON, Ohio – Redshirt junior guard Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) broke the Akron women's basketball program record for most three-pointers in a single-game, 10, and scored a career-best 32 points as the Zips rolled to a 93-33 victory over Ohio Christian at James A. Rhodes Arena Saturday evening.
Â
Sefcik found herself with the hot hand going 11-of-19 from the floor, with 10 of her made field goals coming from beyond the arc, which broke the program record. The Zips guard surpassed the previous record which was set a season ago by Hannah Plybon when she hit nine triples in a win against Canisius on Nov. 20, 2016. To go along with breaking a school record, Sefcik also tied the Mid-American Conference record for three-pointers in a single-game and beat her previous career-mark of 20 points with her 32 points, two rebound, two assists, two blocks, and two steal performance.
Â
All 11 players that saw minutes on the court for the Zips contributed to Akron's 93 total points. Behind a game-high 32 points from Sefcik, was freshman Destiny Perkins (Indianapolis, Ind.) tying a career-high ten points to go along with a career-best six assists. Sophomores Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.), Alyssa Clay (Indianapolis, Ind.), and freshman Kynnedy Azubike (Columbus, Ohio) scored eight points each, including a combined nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals.
Â
Freshman Sarah Leyendecker (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) also etched her named into a program's top-ten list with eight blocked shots in a single-game, which puts her in tied for second place all-time. Not to be overshadowed by her eight blocks were a career-best 11 rebounds for the 6-4 forward.
Â
As a team, Akron shot an efficient 50 percent from the floor (34-of-68) and 48.3 percent from long range (14-of-29). The Zips outscored the Trailblazers in the paint (36-to-6), off turnovers (18-to-5), second-chance points (20-to-2), and bench points (39-to-11).
Â
Defensively, the Zips allowed just 33 points to the Trailblazers, which ranks sixth all-time in school history in fewest points allowed. To accomplish such feat, Akron limited Ohio Christian to 11-of-70 shooting from the field (15.7 percent) and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc (6-of-28). Â The Trailblazers scored just 15 points combined between the first (8), second (4), and fourth quarters (3), and tallied 18 points in the third quarter.
Â
A fast and efficient start for the Zips gave Akron an early 11-0 lead within the first three minutes of the contest before Ohio Christian tallied its first points at the 6:49 mark in quarter number one. Senior Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) and Edmonds combined to score the first eight points of the game and the Akron run was capped off by Sefcik's first of many triples.
Â
From that point on, the first quarter went back and forth between the Zips and Trailblazers with Akron edging Ohio Christian, 10-8, in the final six minutes of the period as Akron led 21-8 after 10 minutes of play.
Â
The Zips offensive unit took off in the second period of play outscoring Ohio Christian 28-4. When Sefcik got an open look, the Zips guard was automatic from long range hitting four consecutive three-pointers in a three-minute span (5:26-2:25) and nailed five triples total in the period.
Â
In the second stanza, the Akron defense limited Ohio Christian to four points scoring at the 9:29 mark and not again until there was 2:30 left on the clock. In that time span, Akron scored 15 straight points.
Â
The Trailblazers were able to find an offensive rhythm and the bottom of the net in the third quarter scoring 18 points, but the Zips edged Ohio Christian, 22-18 in period number three. Sefcik hit two more three-pointers for Akron, while the Trailblazers' Kiara Rohrer scored a quarter-high nine points.
Â
After a battle in the third quarter, the Zips took control of the game in the fourth quarter and did not look back as Akron again outscored Ohio Christian 22-3 in the final 10 minutes of the game. At the 7:46 mark of quarter number four, Sefick drained triple number nine to tie the program record and give Akron a 77-30 lead. In the following possession (7:14), Sefcik nearly went back-to-back but her shot was off the mark. The next opportunity came with 6:43 left to play and she would not be denied again, as she hit nothing but net to break the record and the bench erupted in cheers.
Â
From that point on, the Zips closed out the contest with a 13-2 run to come out with a 93-33 victory.
Â
Akron now heads down to Fort Myers, Fla., to take part in the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn Classic, hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University. The Zips are scheduled for contests against SIU Edwardsville on Wednesday, Dec. 20 and Harvard on Thursday, Dec. 21.
