MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan's Presley Hudson and Tinara Moore combined to scored 64 points as the University of Akron women's basketball team suffered an 89-62 setback versus the Chippewas (10-4, 2-0 MAC), the Mid-American Conference's preseason favorite, on Wednesday, Jan. 4.
Senior Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio) led three Zips (7-6, 0-2 MAC) scoring in double figures with a team-high 14 points, while senior Alex Ricketts (Mercer, Pa.) and redshirt sophomore Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) each recorded 11 points. The Chippewas posted a 41-29 advantage in rebounds and parlayed the difference into a 20-4 margin in points in the paint. Central Michigan also forced a season-high 25 turnovers for Akron and converted those miscues into 39 points.
The Zips finished the affair shooting nearly 39 percent (.386) from the floor, including making 11 three pointers. The Chippewas wrapped the evening connecting at a 50.8-percent clip and made nine triples, including six from Hudson.
Central Michigan led by as many as nine points in the first quarter behind 13 points from Hudson before the Zips closed the stanza with a 6-0 run, including a three pointer from Harmon at the buzzer to cut the deficit to three, 25-22.
The Chippewas continued their hot shooting as they opened the second quarter on a 9-0 scoring run to assume a 34-22 lead after a made jumper by Presley at the 6:53 mark.
Akron had a scoring surge of its own as a 9-0 run sparked by three pointers from Harmon and fellow freshman Haliegh Reinoehl (Westfield, Ind.) brought the Zips within three, 34-31, with 4:53 remaining before halftime.
The Chippewas responded outscoring the Zips, 16-7, to close the half and take a 50-38 advantage into halftime.
Akron connected on 43.8 percent of its shot in the first half, while Central Michigan hit at a 61.3-percent clip, including going 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.
