OTTAWA, Canada – Senior guard Hannah Plybon (Orville, Ohio) led all scorers with 29 points, but it wasn't enough as the University of Akron women's basketball team suffered a 66-58 loss to Carleton University at the Raven's Nest in Alumni Hall.
"We are always here to win games so I'm disappointed with the loss," said head coach Jodi Kest. "At the end of the game we made a nice run then turned the ball over so we will hopefully learn from these type of mistakes. We also tried some different combinations and did some different things, which was interesting to see. They were a very veteran team and we are a very young team but this will ultimately help us down the road."
Plybon scored 16 of her 29 points in the first half. The senior went 10-for-20 shooting for the game while pulling down five boards. Junior Alli Ball (Saint Louis, Mo.) contributed nine points and a team-high six rebounds while sophomore Fredniqua Walker (Cleveland, Ohio) added six points, five rebounds and two assists.
UA struggled to shoot in the second half as the Zips finished the game going 20-for-61 (32.8 percent) from the floor. Carleton slightly outshot Akron with a 25-for-71 (35.2 percent) showing from the field. The Ravens also held a slim advantage on the boards, grabbing 41 rebounds compared to UA's 38.
It was a tight game through much of the first half with Akron holding on to an 11-8 lead with 3:35 to play in the first stanza. However, the Zips scored five consecutive points off a jumper by junior Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) and a 3-pointer by Plybon to push their lead to eight. Both teams went scoreless over the following two minutes until the Ravens recorded the last bucket, ending the period down 16-10.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair as UA maintained a 23-17 lead with 6:30 remaining on the clock. However, the CU fought back to trail 33-30 going into halftime.Â
Coming back from intermission, Carleton took their first lead of the game since the first period at the 7:56 mark of the third stanza. CU held a thin advantage for the rest of the quarter but a Plybon shot from beyond the arc gave the Zips a one-point gain in the beginning of the final period. From there, the Ravens went on a 13-0 run that was too much for Akron to battle back from.Â
The Zips close out their 2016 foreign tour with a game against McGill University on Thursday, August 25 at 7 p.m.
