Ricketts Rallies Akron Past Youngstown State, 76-74

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Sparked by a career-high 20 points from senior Alex Ricketts (Mercer, Pa.), including seven in overtime, the University of Akron women's basketball team registered a come-from-behind 76-64 victory at Youngstown State (3-5) on Tuesday, Dec. 6.
Ricketts posted her second career double-double pulling down 10 rebounds to go along with her team-best 20 points.
The Zips (4-2) had four players turn in double-digit scoring performance as Ricketts, senior Hannah Plybon (Orrville, Ohio), freshman Shaunay Edmonds (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and redshirt sophomore Megan Sefcik (Austintown, Ohio) tallied 20, 18, 12 and 12 points, respectively. The 12 points represented a new career-high total for Edmonds.
Plybon added a career- and game-high 11 rebounds to notch her first career double-double.
The Penguins received 21- and 19-point efforts from Indiya Benjamin and Mary Dunn.
Akron finished the affair shooting 36.7 percent from the field, while Youngstown State connected at a 42.4-percent clip on the evening.
In a nearly even contest statistically, the Zips bettered the Penguins on the boards, 43-34, including 13-9 on the offensive glass.
Ricketts nearly won the game in regulation, as her jumper from the wing didn't fall for the game-winning shot.
In overtime, Akron went ahead to stay, 67-66, on a triple from Ricketts at the 2:52 mark. The Zips grew the lead to as many as seven points before holding on for the two-point victory.
The fourth quarter proved to be back-and-forth affair as neither side led by more than four points over the final 10 minutes of play.
The Penguins entered the final stanza leading by one, 47-46, and extended their advantage to 51-47, before a 6-0 run capped by a lay-up from junior Greta Burry (Lakewood, Ohio) at the 8:21 mark gave Akron a 53-51 margin.
Youngstown State took a 62-59 lead with a 3:47 to play on a three pointer from Benjamin.
A pair of free throws from Ricketts with 1:25 remaining tied the game at 62 and proved to be the final points in regulation.
The Zips scored the game's initial four points before the Penguins registered a 10-2 run to assume a 10-6 lead at the 4:07 mark.
Akron cut the deficit to three, 15-12, on a jumper by Ricketts at the 2:12 mark. Youngstown State answered closing out the quarter on a 6-2 run to maintain a 21-14 lead.
The Penguins connected on 57.1 percent of their attempts in the opening stanza, while limiting Akron to a 33.3-percent clip.
Youngstown State extended its advantage to 27-16 with 5:51 remaining before halftime.
The Zips had a run of their own in the works outscoring the Penguins 13-2 over the next 5:01 to square the game at 29 following a triple by Sefcik 31 seconds before the intermission. Sefcik scored five of Akron's 13 points in the scoring run.
A jumper by Kelley Wright as time expired gave the Penguins a 31-29 lead going into halftime.
Akron shot 32.1 percent in the opening half led by nine points apiece from, Plybon and Sefcik, while Ricketts added six points. Youngstown State hit 44.8 percent of its shots in the first half led by 12 points from Benjamin.
After the Penguins scored the initial two points of the third quarter, the Zips went on a 12-2 run to take a 41-35 lead on a basket by Plybon.
Youngstown State closed the quarter on a 10-3 run of its own to take a 47-46 advantage into the final 10 minutes after a buzzer-beating lay-up by Mailee Jones.
Akron returns to action with a 2 p.m. matinee affair on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Eastern Kentucky.
