Akron Secures 11-5 Win over College of Charleston, Selker Homers Twice

MT. PLEASANT, SC -- The Akron Zips secured the first win of the season, defeating the Charleston Cougars 11-5 as Sydney Selker and Meagan Lee led the offensive efforts on Thursday.

Sophomore Sydney Selker put together a stellar performance at the plate, hitting two homeruns in a 2 for 4 effort with four RBIs. Lee led the Zips with a 3 for 5 performance, including a double and two runs scored. Katie Cantrell and Lily Sullivan added to to the Zips firepower as Cantrell went 2 for 3 with an RBI and walk, while Sullivan went 1 for 3 with a homerun and three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Zips put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Akron picked up a pair of runs in the frame.

The Zips lost the lead they built in the second, but got back on the board in the third trailing 3-2. Lee came across to score the lone run of the inning for Akron, which brought the score level at 3-3.

Charleston (SC) broke that tie and grabbed a 4-3 lead heading into the fifth, when Akron grabbed the advantage at 5-4. Freshman Ava Hensley and Sullivan came in to score the two Zips runs in the frame.

Akron held the Cougars without a run before their offense got in gear the next inning. The Zips scored four runs in the inning, highlighted by a one-run groundout off the bat of junior Katie Cantrell, bringing the score to 9-4 in favor of Akron.

The Zips kept Charleston (SC) without a run before expanding their lead to 11-4 the following inning. Akron picked up a pair of runs in the frame. Charleston (SC) put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Zips still coasted to the 11-5 win.
