Akron Drops Extra Inning Affair (9 inn.) to Sacred Heart 3-1

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Akron Zips dropped a pair of games to open the Lowcountry Classic, falling in extra-innings to Sacred Heart 3-1 and to UConn 7-2 on Friday.
GAME 1 vs Sacred Heart
The Akron Zips plated the first run in the top of the eighth inning but couldn't hold on to the lead as the Pioneers tied the game in the bottom half of the inning and hit a 2-run walk-off homer to win it in the ninth.Â
Madie Jamrog (0-3) got the ball to start for Akron (1-6) and threw seven shut-out innings, before the Pioneers plated runs in the eighth and ninth innings.  The right-hander went 8.2 innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out five.
Offensively, the Zips out-hit the Pioneers 4-3 as three of those hits came out of the one and two hole hitters. Brooke Sivek and pinch hitter Kylie Bailey collected hits out of the leadoff position and Meagan Lee secured a hit from the second position in the lineup. Bailey was responsible for Akron's lone extra-base hit with an RBI double in the eighth inning to open the scoring. In addition, Sydney Selker recorded the Zips fourth hit of the day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Zips got on the scoreboard first, starting in the eighth inning. Akron got on the board thanks to freshman Kylie Bailey's RBI double with two outs. The Zips were unable to hold the lead, as Sacred Heart scored three times over the remaining one inning to grab the 3-1 win.
GAME NOTES
» Akron's highest scoring inning was the eighth, when it pushed one run across.
» The Zips out-hit the Pioneers at a 4-3 clip.
» Akron pitchers faced 30 Sacred Heart hitters in the game, allowing three ground balls and 18 fly balls while striking out five.
» Bailey led the Zips at the plate, going 1 for 1 with a double and an RBI.
GAME 2Â vs UConn
Kenzie Gatti and Andrea Day each recorded a hit for the Zips as Akron fell 7-2 to UConn. Kylie Bailey and Sydney Selker registered the RBI to complete the Zips offensive output.Â
UP NEXT
The Zips will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 14 against UConn at 10 a.m. and Western Carolina at 12:30 p.m.
