ATHENS, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's basketball team erased an 11-point halftime deficit but was unable to overcome Ohio down the stretch as the Bobcats earned a 73-56 triumph over the Zips in Mid-American Conference action on Saturday (Jan. 3).
Freshman Corinne Reed (Chicago, Ill.) led the Zips with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) tacked on an eight-point, seven-rebound and two-steal performance, while junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio) chipped in as well with eight points and nine rebounds.
Clark pulled down four offensive rebounds to lead an offense that racked up 17 offensive boards and turning them into 15 second-chance points.
The Akron defense was effective at taking away the basketball forcing 19 Ohio turnovers. Those takeaways turned into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor. Clark's two steals led the way individually for the Zips.
How It Happened
After falling behind 3-0, Akron went on a 6-0 run with 8:51 left in the first quarter, culminating in a three from freshman Shaena Brew (Rialto, Calif.), to take a 6-3 lead. The Zips entered the second quarter down 25-18.
Akron was limited to nine points in the second quarter and faced a 38-27 halftime deficit.
Akron came out of halftime on fire, going on a 11-0 run to square the game at 38-38Â on a layup from McGuff with 7:27 to go in the third. Ohio countered and stretched its lead to 57-49 heading into the fourth. Akron played well near the basket, scoring 12 of its 22 points in the paint.
Akron could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 73-56. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down one shot to account for three of its seven points.
