AKRON, Ohio -Â The University of Akron women's basketball team got a trio of double-figure scoring efforts, including a team-high 13-point effort from junior Keiryn McGuff (Dublin, Ohio), but fell 79-56 to Miami in Mid-American Conference action at James A. Rhodes Arena on Saturday (Jan. 10).
The Zips were led by McGuff, who had 13 points and six rebounds. Sophomore Ni'Rah Clark (Toledo, Ohio) added 11 points and redshirt senior Kam'Ren Rhodes (Chandler, Ariz.) helped out with a season-high 11 points off of the bench.
Akron out-rebounded Miami, 38-30, in Saturday's game, paced by McGuff's six boards. The Zips also grabbed 17 offensive rebounds and scored 12 second-chance points.
The Akron defense forced 17 Miami turnovers and those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Junior Ella Wigal (Granville, Ohio) led the way individually for the Zips with two steals.
How It Happened
After falling behind 16-12, Akron went on a 7-0 run with 2:09 left in the first quarter to take a 19-16 lead. The Zips entered the quarter break with a 21-20 advantage. Akron relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down four shots to account for 12 of its 21 points.
The Redhawks parlayed a 14-0 run in the second quarter to assume the lead and enter halftime with a 38-23 advantage.
Akron faced a 60-42 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Akron knocked down three three-pointers in the quarter to score nine of its 19 total points.
Miami widened its lead in the fourth, constructing a 68-42 advantage before Akron went on a 5-0 run, finished off by McGuff's three, to shrink the deficit to 68-47 with 5:28 to go in the contest. Miami responded and outscored the Zips the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 79-56. Akron fired away from deep in the quarter, knocking down two shots to account for six of its 14 points.
